I went to St. Thomas about six years ago on a cruise. I was pretty young but if I remember correctly it is one of the most beautiful places I've been to. If you're headed to St. Thomas and want a nice, relaxing beach with calm waters, head to Megan's Bay. I'm not sure about what to do on any of the other islands.
hehe... hope the name of the islands isn't literal, otherwise I'm afraid I wouldn't qualify. By that time we'll have been married for a few days so my husband-to-be won't qualify either.
don't bother with St. Croix, The Hess refinery takes up about a fifth of the island. Its good if you go for work reasons there, otherwise find somewhere else
What he says. Go to St Thomas instead. More tourist friendly and "Americanized". I lived in St Croix for 4 years. NOT a tourist destination.... Snorkeling/Scuba diving, Megen's Bay beach, Atlantis submarine ride, CHEAP rum and jewelry if you can convince the hubby And you DONT need a passport for the US Virgin Islands. Govt ID or driver's license is fine.
completely disagree with updawg and shroopy. I went to St Croix in '06 and '07 for week-long vacations, and they were a ton of fun. Good reef Caribbean diving, and generally a good time on the beach. It's not a touristy spot in the sense of finding a ton of places to go parasailing and whatnot, but I guess our group aims for the quieter scene to relax on the beach anyway. There are still a lot of touristy shops in the city and beach restaurants, etc. And you DO need a passport for the US Virgin Islands. I believe that changed around January of 2007. At least look into that rule.. pretty sure it changed to being required though. FYI, I went to St. Martin (half French, half Dutch).. not as good as St. Croix. Kind of dumpy really on St. Martin..
I don't think that affects US territories. See the following link : http://travel.state.gov/passport_cal/passport_travel_requirements.php# But like kaleidosky said... you may want to make sure... Oh, and take pics and post them please... I've always wanted to go.
As long as u have a birth certificate,dl,ss card, no passport needed for the territories. I actually had more fun in puerto rico than st thomas.
The port area at Charlotte Amilie is way to urban and touristy. No Lie, we were coming up the ferry steps coming from Tortola in 1994 and a dude got shot on the other side of the fence and nobody got too excited about it. The Customs Agents didn't even pull their guns, they barely looked up. I haven't been to the beautiful parts of St. Thomas but in passing through we go to Coki Beach right by the Aquarium to load up on essential tropical herbs. Nice funky little 'local' beach there too and reef fish about 50' from shore. It's just a cab ride away if you are overnighting on a cruise ship. When the cab drops you off, someone will greet you and offer to set up your beach chairs and bring you drinks, tip him a $20 and you'll have a great afternoon. He'll know the local Rasta herb man too. Tortola is great, Virgin Gorda is better and the ferry rides out there are fun. My favorite island so far though is St. Barths. It's like you took the people from the French Riviera, the landscape of West Austin and plunked them into the fabulous blue Carribean water. The Cayman is actually the easiest to come and go from, to navigate and to do all the things you'd want to do. You really can't beat it. They did have a pretty hard hurricane season this year though.
I highly reccomend St. John. You get there on a ferry from St. Thomas. It's a smaller, "homier" island than St. Thomas and very cool.
