I was watching TV right now, just fixing to go to sleep and my tv messed up. I have a Hitachi ultravision 32" TV and right now, it looks like the screen shrunk to a line in the middle of the tv. There is a line in the middle of the tv going side to side where the picture is. Its about 3" wide. The TV is black above this line and below this line. This line is centered in the middle of the TV going side side and contains what should be the picture. If anyone knows what is wrong or can help me or knows anyone that can help me...please do. Football season is underway and we need the TV. Thanks

Buy a new one. Seriously. In all likelihood it will be cost prohibitive to have it fixed and you certainly don't want to go monkeying around inside the box.

I remember the problem you're describing; while I don't know what causes it, I've seen it before (on the 55" Mitsubishi I had before I got my HD unit). It eventually fixed itself (after 2 or 3 weeks), but not before I replaced it with the new unit.

You don't sound like you're willing to wait that long. On top of which, my Mitsubishi was a projection TV so it didn't work the same way as the model you're describing; no telling when or if your TV will correct itself.

I'd fork over the $500 and buy a similar replacement model if I were you. Actually I'd fork over the $1200 - $2000 and buy a very large HD model but that's just me.

I had a TV do the same thing. Sometimes only the top half of the screen would disappear, but mostly all of the screen, just like you described. I bought a new one as well, so I have no idea how much it would cost to fix.

Your profile doesn't specify what part of Houston you are in

There is a Electronics repair shop on HWY 6 between Beechnut and Bissonnet.

A year ago, the owner would charge $10 to give a diagnosis of the problem. If you decided to have him fix it, then the $10 would be credited as partial payment on the total repair bill.

I am not sure of his current rate..........................but you might consider pricing a new TV just in case the repair bill is more than you can justify on fixing the one you currently own.

    Give mango's guy a go.

Same thing happened to my parent's TV about five years ago. Repair man came out and fixed it for under $50. TV's still going strong.

I've no idea what was wrong.

(that's unless you're looking for an excuse to buy a new TV ;)).

There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image; make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to the outer limits.

Mango - I live in Denver Harbor, Interstate 10 at Wayside and Wallisville. That would be a little drive but for $10 thats cool. I got an uncle that could probably fix it if he knew what was wrong (assuming that he still charges that).

I plan to keep the TV as I am in no position to buy another (I am currently pursuing my Associates Degree in Health Information Management and school is a little expensive). $50 dollars is cool for someone to come out and fix it so, I may look into that. If anyone has anymore information, it will be very helpful. Thanks again, guys

Its probaby because your speakers are too close to the TV and they are not demagnetized ( I think is the word). Only special speakers can be close to the TV.

Is it a true center speaker, because they are usually meant to be put on top of TV's and near them or are you using a regular speaker as a center speaker?

Then it shoudn't be a problem, they are meant to be near the TV like that. I have mine on top and it doesn't do that. That might not be your problem. Are there any speakers on the sides of the TV that the back end (the part where the speaker wire hooks up) is facing the tv. Usually, that will cause the sides of the tv to turn all different colors. Try moving the speakers away from the TV some and face the back end towards the wall instead of the TV.

naw buddy, it shouldn't. You know, that would be some crap, if your center speaker is causing this problem. Center speakers are supposed to be near your TV. If that is problem (which I doubt) then I would be pretty mad. Anyway, if its not the center, then its probably your TV. Looks like me and you are in the same boat
