Cricket World Cup is there next year. I am sure I can get the tix to the matches that I want. I'm worried about getting a hotel though. Everything that I am reading says that Barbados is super expensive. Hotels are expensive, restaurants are expensive and cabs are expensive. The stadium is in Bridgetown and I want to stay as close to that as possible. Just got back from Belize and while it was beautiful, it was probably not worth the money we spent. Hotels were expensive for what the charged. Customer service is unheard of. Cabs and any transportation within Belize is freakin expensive. Restaurants aren't exactly cheap either. I'm just worried Barbados will be more of the same.
Tickets aren't that hard to come by for the World Cup of Cricket actually. I went a few years ago to the World Cup in South Africa, and there were alot of resellers/scalpers/touts or whatever you want to call them. Most were selling below face value, since demand was quite low. Demand might be higher in the West Indies area, since the sport is more popular there. On a related note, I went to the World Cup with my gf and her family. They are of Indian heritage. Anyways, we happened to be staying at the same hotel as the Indian team, and my gf's father invited the team to have some home cooked Indian meals with us. Her father was just partially joking but they accepted our invite. The women of our group were not too pleased in that they had to suddenly find ingredients and cook food for about 20 people. I got to meet some of my cricket heroes in Tendulker, Ganguly, Kumble and Harbajan Singh. Its kind of neat in that most of the cricket players just hang out in the hotel lobby, like they have nothing to do. I follow mostly the South Asian cricket, because their styles to be more of the artistic game as opposed to the power of the Aussies and West Indians. Another cool thing is that my good friend's sister's cousin is married to Rahul Dravid. He is a pretty badass cricketeer. I've been to Trinidad and Tobago, but never to Barbados so I don't know the prices there to be exact. If you liked Indian women mixed with Hispaniola blood you'll be in the right place. Very exotic. From what I've heard about Barbados you can get decent accomodations for around USD 100 upward. Which group or teams are you intending to see? It will be alot cheaper if you see Group play in either Jamaica or West Indies, rather than the finals. But then again the final is like the Super Bowl times 10.
I'm Indian so of course I follow India. Dravid is my favorite cricketer right now. The guy has ice water in his viens and is about as clutch as any athlete I have ever seen. Indian cricket players are pretty cool to hang out with when they are not in India. They act like normal people. But some will be sruprise at how much the Indian players make. Some of them actually make NBA type money.
I'll be going there in August for my honeymoon and have done a little research. Public transportation is supposed to be dirt cheap there...public busses are like $.50 per ride. The books suggest that you get a cab through your hotel, though, instead of just hailing one and to settle on a price up front. There are a lot of very nice, expensive hotels on the beaches, but I'm sure there have got to be some cheaper ones as well. I'm just not sure how comfortable they would be. I'll be sure to bump this thread with any new info I have when I get back in a few months!
Wow...a blast from the past. A belated update: I had bought approximately $2800 worth of game tickets to watch India and Pakistan (of course I was going to boo these mofos) play. Four of us were going to go. And of course for the first time in the history of World Cup India and Pakistan fail to make the Super Six. I tried selling the tickets on ebay for way below face value. Tried giving them away few days before the matches for free as well! Nobody wanted to watch Canada or Bangladesh or Denmark or whoever made the Super Six instead. I ripped up all the tickets and threw em in the trash.
At that ticket value, would probably have been worth to still fly there anyway and to try and tout them in front of the stadium...
Our airline tix were free and we had rented an awesome bunglow. All of us were too pissed to go though. Got our money back for the bunglow and canceled the flight.
