If Dream retires and we buy out the rest of his contract, will he still count against the cap? The way he has been playing it seems like next year maybe even worse. Don't get me wrong, I would love to continue to see Olajuwon play, but I hate to see him struggle like this. Also, since Barkley said he would be back for the last couple of games, this might be a good time for him to retire. With the Upcoming Y2K free agency, we could really use some cap space. So any chance whatever so that we can free up enough cap space for an awesome free agent?

I'm no expert on the subject but I beleive if we buyout his contract this year it'll count against the cap this summer but not the following (something like that).

    DreamStillKills,

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've read two of your posts and there is only one thing that comes to mind -- SHUT UP.

I think it's fine for you to express an opinion about Hakeem (you won't find people who love him anymore than the people on this site). But let me say that there's no reason to act or talk like a seventh grader who wants to pretend that he's out on the playground.

It's past your bedtime; get some sleep.

God I have no idea what the hell that guy's problem. I mean Hakeem is and always will be my favorite player of all time. But he is not the best player in the league anymore, contrary to what Mr. "Dreamstillkills" said. I think once a player is injured ever single year, that means his body can't take it anymore and he's too old. I think it would be best for the future of his team if he either was cut, hope not, or for him to retire along with Barkley at the end of the year like he had planned. I wish we could somehow clear up some cap space because I think we could get two players that could help us out for a long time while and still have plenty of cap space.

We can buy out his contract.HOWEVER, HE ONLY GETS HALF OF HIS MONEY AND IT STILLS COUNT FULL AGAINST THE CAP Why do that then? If its going to count full against the cap why not keep him on the roster? Plus he only gets half of his salary and I don't think he wants to do that.

I would like to get rid of Dream's contract so we could make a run at Duncan, but under these circumstances, there is no point in buying out his contract.

    DanaB,

All payouts count towards the cap. It does not matter if the player is on the team or not. It is that simple.

With that said, you can negotiate buy-outs to be 50% of current contract. Meaning he could drop to $7m (or whatever it is), but not to zero. If you can talk Dream into retiring and taking $7m to do so, not only would you be a shrewd negotiator, you'd be the envy of all fantasy GMs on the net.

    It's not happening. Drop it.

Can a player renegotiate/restructure his contract to help a team out with the salary cap? (Sorta how many football teams are doing it?)

If so, would most of you want Hakeem to take less money but play two more years, to free up cap space, or would most of you just prefer to take the cap hit and have him only play one more year?

If anyone is hoping to buy out the Dream's contract at lower than face value, then they are disrespecting Hakeem for all his years of service. He is getting paid now for all the years when he wasn't in the top three (maybe top five) in CENTER's salaries. We had him cheap for many many years. Now, it's time for him to get his. He's earned it.

Nope, you can't renegotiate to a lower contract. Here's the quote from the salary cap FAQ:
"Contracts cannot be renegotiated downward (players can't take a "pay cut" in order to create salary cap room for the team). Contracts cannot be renegotiated to contain fewer seasons. "

Not an actual pay cut, but more of a restructuring.

For instance, let's say Hakeem is making $12 mil next year (I don't know what it actually is). But, he renegotiates a two-year deal, but for $7 mil per year. Then, he would count for less against the cap, and not be losing any money... sorta.

Anyway, that seems to be how the NFL has been doing it.

Spreading the money out over 2 years is considered a decrease in pay because his salary for next season would have gone from $14M to $7M. You can't do that.

I used $12M and $7M, so the total amount went up, but the average went down.

If he is supposed to get $14M, then I'd use $8M for two years....

2 more years? GOD NO! The cap space etc. all comes second, IMHO, in this situation. This is about protecting a legend's image. Already he has decreased to the mere level of inconsistent, slight-effectiveness. I think it would have been best if the Dream had retired after last year, while he was still fresh in the memories of all, as a great one. Do you want the last memory of Hakeem the Dream, arguably the greatest 5 man to ever play the game, be of a ineffective, unmotivated bench player? I doubt Hakeem cares about his image, but I think he should have left when he was still on top like so many other greats did.
