I have seen and heard many references to 'the deal' which 'almost' went down in February, involving Baron Davis and Tracy The Grady. Has there been any reliable 'report' on just how that 'deal' was structured? As in, who else was involved to make $s work? Thanks.
i dont think it almost went down, it was more of a rumor, or at most an (counter)offer by LA...I dont think Morey like Baron's contract at all to take on him
I did, as well. However, I keep hearing it as having been surgically avoided from happening. In other words, scuttled by McG's strange medical tour???
I heard that. It's most likely manufactured McGrady hate, but you never know. There aren't any decent sources out there. Here are some examples: http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/91633 http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=519165 And PLENTY more if you google "TMac for Baron Davis". The consensus seems to be that there were talks going until a few days after McGrady's announcement, and then it just fizzled into thin air. Probably was never really close, but was just something bloggers flocked to.
Exactly. I even remember the interview Morey had about that. They asked him about the trade, and he said it wasn't even a rumor. It was not an option at all. By the way, very bad title. Remember, it is OFFSEASON. It seems like Baron is almost a Rocket
I'll take any superstar over Tmac....or McLazy aka no heart, no D, no desire, no will, no defense, no chemistry.
i think they both did, the problem is fans and the media start to twist the info, so what really is counteroffer by one team becomes gets changed to a deal that both sides were working out and just didnt happen. From what i remember: - The rockets inquired about Carter, possibly throwing tmac as bait, the nets said we dont want an injured guy, they gave a counter offer (which i think was ron, landry, shane and head for carter and boone) - houston declined. - This is where LA comes in. Hou and NJ knew they'd need a third team, so LA was considered as the team to take Tmac's contract, they send some guys to NJ (not necessarily baron) and NJ sends their guys here - That's when Tmac made his announcement, LA then said nevermind since they were hoping tmac was coming back and would eventually be close to 100% without surgery, therefore forcing NJ to back off too. - LA wasn't gonna give up several young players for Tmac's contract, BUT Baron they would give up because they no longer like the contract they gave him, so when NJ also backed off, LA sent hou the offer of baron for tmac, which houston laughed at.
Baron Davis is not a Daryl Morey type player. I think the real target, as others mentioned, is Vince Carter.
That's the funny thing. Only like half a season into that massive contract, the Clippers were trying to trade him. Talk about buyers remorse.
From what I remember it was Artest being dangled for Camby then the Clippers brought up Davis for McGrady. Artest was the guy Houston was shopping not McGrady... until things changed. So basically LAC wanted McGrady, not so much Houston wanting Davis.
IIRC, Morey did not publicly admit to going after any player except Caron Butler, and he denied both the Baron Davis and Vince Carter rumors in a podcast soon after the deadline. I wouldn't be surprisd if he wasn't telling the entire truth, but we'll never know.
Makes sense, if that is the case, then it means they are not really looking to shed salary, which means the chances of VC to rockets is slim indeed.
I think the general idea of the trade was that we'd use T-Mac's expiring contract to get some players who can contribute now. Hence the result of the rumor. But Morey's not stupid enough to take on Baron Davis' contract. The Clippers need to REALLY sugarcoat the deal to get Baron Davis onto another team. Perhaps trading down from the 1st pick...
