This. You need help from a professional. Different shoes provide different support to different areas. It all depends on your stride and foot shape.

If you're in Houston, go to Luke's and talk to someone there. They will set you up.

Switched to minimalist running shoes the past 2 years and absolutely love them. If you find a good pair, you get enough cusioning with about 1/2 the weight of regular running shoes You quickly find out how much of a difference a couple ounces can make, especially considering how much comes from the aesthetics.

I'm currently running in these and highly recommend them...

Getting a good running shoe is all about getting fitted.

Make sure they watch your gait, your heel strike, your arch flex, and your pronation/supination.

There is no single "good shoe". It's about what fits your foot and the mechanics of how you run.

You'll find the brand you prefer after a few test runs around the store.

I've tried Saucony, Mizuno, Asics, and Brooks. I prefer Asics with Mizuno and Brooks tied for second. Saucony is too beefy for my taste.

I am an over-pronator, so I need a good motion control shoe. For the past ten years or so, I have sworn by the Asics Foundation series.

Unfortunately, they discontinued that model (at least at my local Running Room store) so I bought a pair of Saucony Progrid Stabil. No complaints so far.

Well ended up going to Luke's Locker and decided on a pair of these Asics!

Got a great deal at $59.95+tax. the guy pretty much said as a begginer shoe these would be good. In 3 to 5 months depending on how much I run it's adviced to get new shoes and then move up to a better shoe if I want. I have to say I ran with them today and you guys are right! Asics are awesome!! Thanks for the help!

I've been a Brooks guy for the last decade since I ran in high school. My usual shoe is whatever the latest Brooks Adrenaline GTS line is. I ran in Nike Air Pegasus before the Brooks but I liked Brooks so much more.

I'd echo the other posts saying you should go to a good running store and have an attendant help you out. They'll have you run and give you advice on your running style/pronation/etc. That's much better than any advice you could get here.

Not to take away from Brightside's fitness level, but 30 miles/week is not crazy, at least for runners.

A couple co-workers as well as old friends from college average 40-60 miles/week for training. These guys do have ridiculously low body fat.

Whatever you do don't wear Nikes. They are for looks. I found out the hard way cause both my feet are jacked up.

True for the most part, except for the Air Pegasus or the Zoom Vomero (comparable to the Asics Nimbus). Everything else sucks though, especially the Air Max 360s and Shox.

Glad to see NB so highly rated. Most of my running shoes over the years have been NB because they are the only ones that I've found wide enough for my feet (they have different width as well as length sizes); and always felt I was missing out on trying other shoes like Nike (Nikes are especially narrow).

    ^ Truth.

I have a pair of Vomero's and I use them for casual wear/walking, but they are a decent running shoe... one of the softest on the market, which is why I don't run in them, keeps them fresh... good walker shoe, running will wear them out super fast though.

I can remember when I used to run 10 miles daily, 6 days a week.

I can't do that anymore though.

I had some Vomero's but changed to Nike Free 5.0's. I run about 20 miles a week.

    You mean these:

I have people in the gym swear by them. I was thinking of trying them out, but I'm looking for something more casual like.
