i just formatted an external hard drive to fat32 system and ripped some foreign regional DVD. just rename .VOB to .MPG and it will work. you don't have to copy any file to the console. everything works off the 80 gig external drive. it's awesome. any other cool stuff you can do?
What did you use to format a 80gig HD to FAT32? Windows does not allow me to do it. I charge my controllers on my desktop. It does not charge them when the PS3 is turned off so unless I leave it on just to charge them.
http://www.compuapps.com/Download/swissknife/swissknife.htm unlike partition magic, it's a freeware. very easy to use.
forgot you mention, you can't add album cover to the files stored in the external drive. which is fine with me. also, i can't seem to get music file to play in correct order. dvd .VOB files are sorted fine, but you probably have to create a playlist to play the whole movie together if you don't merge the files.
Can the PS3 stream movies from a NAS device? I was thinking about getting one but doubt it would work. I know it probably would if the NAS device was connected to a PC but that's what I'm trying to avoid. I don't want to have a PC turned on all the time.
I can transfer *.m2ts (Blu Ray?) files to my external hard drive or play them from my Windows Media Server laptop... on HD! Do you mean a Windows Media Server? I can do that off my laptop already. It shows all music and video. Or do you mean just one attached to the USB port? I was sharing media from the laptop to an external hard drive and then to the PS3, but when I found out about the Media Server, I just copied the files there and wham-o, copy to the PS3. Neat stuff, this PS3 is.
Anybody know how to get Justin.tv or other streaming video websites to play on PS3? How about MMS links? do you need windows media player installed? I have been trying to get Rockets game links to play but have been having trouble (with the exception of NBA Leaguepass Broadband Preview which worked fine).
I have a 1TB Gigabit Ethernet NAS running Twonky Media Server, and I use my PS3 to stream HD movies(mkv2vob) from the NAS. If you want to stream HD, everything must be gigabit (NAS and router). Here is my setup: DLink DNS-323 Network Storage (running twonky) DLink DIR-655 Xtreme N Wireless Router DLink DAP-1522 Xtreme N Wireless Bridge (hardwired to PS3)
has to be gigabit? i stream VOBS off my desktop over the u-verse router right now with my PS3. Would I need to replace the router if I plan on using a NAS to store my VOBS still?
i don't doubt that at all. It was choking when I was using a linksys WRT54Gc, but right now my PS3 is actually hardwired to the u-verse router. That takes the wireless out of the equation and I'm guessing it's doing 100mb at least so that should be efficient IF i'm not using wireless right?
krnxsnoopy, how does Justin.Tv or the NBA BroadBand send the signal...? Do you know the address and is it done on http or mms protocols? I need a little understanding, I guess, of how it could be done. Anyone have a better way than using the PS2-to-PS3 adaptor that Sony sells to transfer saved games? Moreover, if you DO have the adapter... can I borrow it?
I'm not sure how they send it or the address but I do know the updated PS3 software is Flash enabled and that is how NBA Broadband was able to play. When I try to watch a game on Justin.tv I occasionally get sound however not the video; only a black screen. Sometimes I get the "still screen image" (similar to the ones on Youtube) but never streaming video. It's basically impossible to load up a game.
