Any PS3 Owners Planning on Getting (or Already Have) Warhawk?

The game is already available on the PSN, and I think it got shipped out to stores today (probably not available until tomorrow or the next day I'm guessing). I was thinking about getting this game if it turned out to be a good/great game (early impressions and reviews seem promising, but I'm not quite sold). Since I now have a broadband connection that isn't (AFAIK) capped (although it is somewhat slow by broadband standards...seems like I get on average ~600 Kbits down/~200 Kbits up, not sure if that is bad for online gaming), I was hoping to start up some online games soon. It seems like Warhawk is a good game to get started with (well, it is either Warhawk or Resistance at this point, and I'm a little scared of Resistance to be honest...though I should probably try it once before getting Warhawk to test my connection). Just curious to see if any of you guys will be getting the game as well, or if some of you already have it via the PSN download. I'm somewhat split between the two SKUs. The headset is a big reason why I'm leaning towards the retail version, but I'm wondering if a headset is all the important for online gaming (or whether this particular headset is crap).

Yeah, I should probably rename this thread: "Help RC Cola Get Started with Online Gaming" :)

Here's the Metacritic page for Warhawk (currently rated 82, but still have a lot of reviews to go):

odd that the official playstation mag would give the lowest score, at least it shows that they are not bias like some other "official" magazines.

I dl'd it this afternoon. I was worried that it would be a big file, but 750 wasn't so bad. Resistance online is very fun. If you don't have a headset, I'd get the store version. You could use the headset on other online games and chats.

FWIW, with the exception of Nintendo Power I believe, most of these magazines don't really have any direct affiliation with MS, Sony, or Nintendo AFAIK. Most of the big ones are actually published by the same publishing company, Future Publishing (they have PSM, OXM, OPM UK, ONM UK, and more). Ziff Davis (known for publishing EGM and GFW, also the company behind 1UP) did publish OPM US, but they discontinued that a while back. There might be some bias, but I wouldn't really think much of it (especially since it doesn't seem like these magazines get any great exclusive content from the big 3). This isn't directly related to your post, but I remember thinking that the "official" magazines were in someway affiliated with the big 3.

BTW, I think the guy who reviewed Warhawk at PSM used to be the editor in chief of a Xbox magazine (maybe even OXM) and he sort of blasted Sony in one of the earlier PSM issues I believe. So some people thought there was bias in that review, but not the type you would think from a PS magazine. IIRC, one of his big complaints was that the game was $60....so yeah (the other complaint was that there were no bots).

Yeah, that's probably what I'll do. I was just curious to see if I was overrating the importance of a headset. Plus, I wouldn't mind hearing a little more about the headset packaged with the game (think it got decent reviews at the few sites I checked).

The price is too high for a download IMO. It looks really fun and I love the efforts to create balance. But its online only right? I don't know...

EDIT: Apparently you can play with friends on your own console. Thats huge. How many can play at once from the same PS3? It just seems like one of those fun games you can't put down for awhile. I might bite the bullet...

If people are using them, the headsets are really great. You find a new level of cooperation that you just can't come close to with out voice communication.

You can always opt to get it later. The one that comes with the bundle (Jabra BT125) sells for 20 bucks on amazon so you wouldn't be losing any money.

I think you can have up to 4 players off line.

I think you can play with up to 4 players offline, as tulexan said. Of course, you can have a LAN party as well (guess up to 32 players, just using one disc too IIRC). Not really a big deal unless you're into major gaming competitions though. I think the game makes it easy for your friends to join in on a online game already in progress as well (just press start on a new controller).

What is the difference between buying it in-store and downloading it, if it is online only.

The SKUs are different. The retail/disc version is $60 and it comes with a bluetooth headset as well as additional content on the disc (behind-the-scenes stuff IIRC). I think it also can be used for LAN parties, as I mentioned in my previous post (download version has some additional DRM stuff I think, so it is more restrictive when it comes to multiple people playing the same game, even on the same console). The download version is $40, and can be booted straight from the HDD.

The game itself is the same, but there are some differences depending on how you get the game (in-store or via the PSN).

    Gamespot review is up:
    http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/...topslot;title;1&om_act=convert&om_clk=topslot

The IGN review was posted yesterday, but I'll go ahead and post it here with the Gamespot review:

Metacritic score is up to 84 (the bad PSM review is the only review to give it a poor score).

I got in a couple of hours today. It was just as much fun running with the flag on the ground as it was flying overhead. Camping at the anti-aircraft guns are good fun too. My only complaint about the PSN download is - better game instructions. It took a little bit to get down the controls.

This game is AWESOME. I just finished playing for about 4 hours straight. Its pretty difficult to fly and see your enemies also. Dodging missiles is also a b****.

The only con about this game is the fact that it is 60 dollars.

How much is it on the PSN?
