The other thread about left-handed/right-handed people got me thinking about the challenges I face as a piano player. I learned to play by ear and got very little classical music training, but I've been playing for years and I'm fairly good.

Lately (over the past year) I've been picking up jazz piano, and one of the biggest challenges I've had is learning to comp with my left hand. My right hand is far superior to my left as far as chops/dexterity are concerned, and since I've been so used to just playing root notes/octaves for so long, I find myself having trouble just forming chords with my left hand, let alone comp properly. I dread the day I find myself playing a jazz set on stage and find myself forced to improvise without having a decent comp to go along with it. For someone who's strongly right handed like I am, what's the best way to develop that left hand and get comfortable with using it to voice chords?

Do you like VY's mom more than you like David Carr?

I think David Carr can play piano. He's already got the gloves for it... :D

Keyboardists, especially jazz keyboardists, don't wear sissy gloves, buddy.

I would start doing chromatic scales and regular c minor harmonic scales with the left hand

Start doing the root, 2nd invertion, root, 1st invertion, root chord exercise.

(ex - CEG, CFA, CEG, BDG, CEG)

    do M m 2nd, M m 3rd, P D 4th, P D 5th, M m 6th, M m 7th and octaves up in half steps to get your hands used to the spacing.

Those would be what I would start out with.
