Who is your favorite "character" and what is the funniest bit you've heard? Mine would have to be high school football coach Vernon Dozier. He has some serious anger management issues. My favorite bit was after The Sum Of All Fears came out, Vernon "called in" and was angry that Bush was "too much of a PU$$Y" to use our nuclear weapons in the Middle East. He had a loop of an atomic bomb exploding in the background and it was getting him so excited that he started beating off...complete with sound effects. Another was when Bobby Dooley's son was molested and she was all excited because now she get's to go on Oprah and Sandra Bullock would play her in the movie.
I caught the Bobby Dooley's son was molested story. I was completely outraged for about 10 minutes until I got it. I did hear several radio spots afterwards stating explicitly that Bobby was fictional. I suspect not a few listeners dif not get it and called the radio station to complain. It is really surprising how many people call into the show, who must be first time listeners or who are completely clueless.
Vernon Dozier and Bud Dickman are easily my favorites along with the old lawyer who coughs all the time and constantly throws smart @ss comments to Phil. My favorites had to be when Dozier killed off half his team from heat exhaustion saying they were p*ssies and that he wouldn't take someone with asthma because they would run home to "mama". And the one where he was ticked off at the government for sending generals over seas instead of football coaches because football coaches are better strategists because football is "war". And one of the craziest had to be when he "called" Phil's show and went off on Canada for falling asleep at the wheel and letting terrorists sneak in. The guy was just ranting and rambling, absolutely classic stuff.
Harvey Wireman is the old lawyer with the piece of cottage cheese stuck in his throat. I also like Jay Santos with the Citizens Auxillary Police. He's always doing "flare drops" and "taking a peek around" to help out the real police. If you mess with him, you just might fall victim to the "3 point take-down". This is when Major Elvis Newton will get on his hands and knees behind you and Jay will push you over. Phil is always asked if he thinks he will ever run out of callers (the ones that don't "get" the show). He says it will never happen. Someone will always be driving around and just happen to fall upon the show for the first time and call in. Can you imagine hearing that show for the first time and not understanding how it works?
I wish. I subscribe to his website and listen at work. He archives all his shows for 30 days and he cuts out the commercial breaks. Ken Charles (950 Program Director) loves him too, but he just couldn't afford to keep him on anymore because of the ratings. I guess Houston just didn't "get" the show.
I fired off a pretty nasty letter to Ken Charles. I wasn't happy with the decision. I used to subscribe but didn't listen to it enough to make it worth it.
That's him, Harvey Wireman. That guy is hilarious, so is Jay Santos. One of my other all time favorites has to be the "program director" David G. Hall. He's constantly busting Phil's @ss because he's not putting on "compelling" radio. And Jim Seals, the guy who Phil shills for advertising money. He's always down at Seals' used car lot shilling for him. The funniest had to be when he was down there for the Planet of the Ape premier and made Phil dress up in an ape suit, give out bananas to vistors while having Phil try to shill for the lot while Bud can't breaking into the broadcast. That had me on the floor in tears!
10 minutes? It took me 2 full shows to figure out was going on. The second time I heard it I thought it was Phil with another person doing the voiced. I was blown away when I found out Phil did all the voices. I watched his live webcast once and it was just a thing of beauty how he was able to go back and forth between the voices.
Yeah, he's great. Funny, the first time I ever heard Phil, Hall was reeming him for calling his wife on the air. He said that was just a cheap ploy to show the listeners that he was a real person. I couldn't believe what I was hearing! What kind of program director would yell at his host on the air for calling his wife? The second time I heard it, Lloyd Bonifide (the bitter old Korean War veteran) was on saying that the pilots of the US spy plane in China were pu$$ies for not crashing the plane and killing themselves. I thought "man that host is so stupid, he doesn't know that this is obviously a prank call". I was right. I just didn't know that Phil was prank calling himself! I saw that webcast too. It was like watching a mad scientist at work.
This call was a classic: From the philhendrieshow.com site: Phil takes a call from a Korean War Vet by the name of Lloyd Bonafide who explains that while stamping his Memorial Day cards that he sends out every year to his vet buddies He heard a lady next to him discussing the hotdogs she was going to BBQ for the holiday weekend. Feeling a bit disrespected and unappreciated, Lloyd went to his car, grabbed a hotdog bun from the bunch he just bought, stuck his "member" in it, covered it in mustard and offered it up tot he lady in question!
He's doing a Lloyd Marathon for Memorial Day. I can't wait to listen at work tomorrow. My favorite was when he was driving across the country in his camper and he refused to stop so his wife could relieve herself. He was mad because when they first met, she could hold it a lot longer than she can now days.
Lloyd was the very first character I heard him do. I heard the show for the first time in Austin. I just couldn't believe what was coming out of his pie hole.
I love Phil Hendrie....my favorite is the home owners lady who didn't want handicap people in her neighbourhood as it would lower property values....classic. DD
Stop it. You guys keep bringing up the classic bits and I'm gonna have to bite a re-subscribe to his audio vault again.
Ah, yes. The immortal Bobby Dooley. She draws the most ire out of more callers than any other "guest". She's just so clueless and her husband Steve is always lurking in the background telling her what to say. After all, he has a "wildly successful landscaping business" and that's how they afford to live in the fabulous gated community of Western Estates. FA, you should really subscribe to his website. It's the only way I get through my workday. He adds a new classic bit almost every day.
