If Hakeem leaves, we'll have enough money to sign Mo and Shandon. I'm not sure on this but I think after resigning this 2 we'll have some money left to sign free agents, but just role players and not big name free agents like Webber, Mutombo, etc. [IMG]

We're going to have to hope that Anderson doesn't opt out of his contract. That way, assuming that Taylor merits the max, we can pay him the max this year, have some room left over for some mid-level guys, then give Anderson the max the next year when he earns his bird rights.

Thank you VJ23k for stepping in early and establishing that you don't max those players. Those guys don't do near the things players like Hill, Duncan, or Shaq do. They set the bar for the max and other players should be paid according to how their numbers compare.

Sure, they aren't as good as KG or Shaq, etc., but if you give them the max, especially Shandon, it's also a repayment for the years they played under what they were worth.

If we keep this team in order, adding various role players here and there, we are young championship contenders in 2-3 years.

No way either of these guys gets the Max this year. Shandon should sign a 1 yr, then have bird rights the next year. I would pay shandon alot if he continues to improve.

For Taylor, I would rather have Webber. The Rocks need to pursue him all the way.

Signing a big free agent next year, then Francis and Shandon, would lock up this team for 4 yrs.

I may not have this 100% correct, but I believe I'm close.

When you're talking "Max" contracts, don't use KG & Shaq as examples. They and a handful of other players (I recall the total being around 12) have a special "grandfather" type clause which doesn't follow the current CBA FA $ limits. NO ONE can nor would pay Shandon or Mo as much as Shaq or KG.

Maybe one of the cap experts on this BBS can set me exactly right on those CBA details.

If we're talking the regular players "Max", let's start with CWebb and then talk to Mo. Of course, Mo might have an outrageous season and then the Rocks will probably just talk with Mo....then again, Falk's his agent!

    Players under contract:

    <table border="0"><TBODY><tr bgcolor="#CC0000"><td><div align="center"><font color="#FFFFFF" size="1">Player</font></div></td><td><div align="center"><font color="#FFFFFF" size="1">Salary</font></div></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Kelvin Cato</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$6 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Dan Langhi</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$0.5 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Steve Francis</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$3.5 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Jason Collier</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$1.3 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Cuttino Mobley</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$4.4 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Carlos Rogers</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$3.8 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Kenny Thomas</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$1 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Walt Williams</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$5.6 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">2001 Rookie+Maloney contract (speculative)</font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$3 million</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#003366"><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Totals </font></td><td><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">$29.1</font></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#CCCCCC"><td height="19"><font size="1">NBA Salary Cap</font></td><td height="19"><font size="1">$43 million</font></td></tr></TBODY></table>

I have no idea if all of this is correct, so please feel free to point out any mistakes.

We would then have $13.1 million, supposedly.
We then have to take Shandon's contract into account. If he opts out we could sign him for $4.1 million. If he doesn't, he counts for $2.4 million.
Next, we have to take Matt Bullard into account. How much do we sign him for? So, I estimate that with these two we'll have to deduct around $4 million from the $13.1 million. This leaves us with around $9.1 million to give to Taylor.

Oh, one more guy to take into account. Moochie Norris. How much will he command?

So, anyway, no max for Taylor after this season. Around $8 million does seem decent to me, though.

Could someone please help me with this damn table?

Bullard won't be back after this year. Why would we sign him when we could use that money on someone who could help us? Webber and Finley are 1,2 on the Rockets list. Cuban said that he will let Finley test the market. Lineup time:

    Cato
    Taylor
    Finley
    Anderson/Mobley
    Francis
    record 60-22.

Cuban didn't say he wanted Finley to test the market. He said he wanted Finley to opt out of his current contract so that he could give him the max, big difference.

There's no way we will have enough money to sign Webber or Finley, IMO.

Impossible to sign Mo and Mike in the same offseason. It won't happen.

What are the chances of SA & Mo T. playing under market value for the better of the team? Especally Mo T. if he wants this team to become a championship contender quick, he wouldnt lock up all the teams cap space.

Why does everyone assume that Shandon will ask for the max? He is a role player and he knows it. He has no illusions of being a superstar. Not all athletes are that stupid. Mo may ask for the max, but the reality is that unless he has a great season, he will end up playing for less. If someone wants to pay him the max then say goodbye and thank him for his contributions to the team. For the past couple of months I've seen one thread after another started on this topic and I just don't get it. Stop worrying about next offseason and concentrate on the 82(maybe more)games we have coming up. Who knows what may transpire between now and then. Mo may blow up and we'll be dying to give him the max. Either way the Rocks' will be in good shape. We don't even know what we need and everyone is worried about how we're going to get it.

One step at a time my friends...

I think Mo should take a little pay cut for the team. Because I don't think Mo is a max player. He is good but not a maxed out type of PF. If he can take a pay cut we may still have a shot at Webber.

    HP,

I guessed correctly. I knew you were the most likely to reply to that one! [IMG]

Anyway, it's strange. I saved the page as an HTML document and opened it up in Dreamweaver. I copied your table and pasted the code in my message. What happens? Table screws up.
So, I looked it up in the source. I think I know what it's about. Let me check that.

    NEITHER DESERVE THE MAX

shandon deserves about the same as Mobley, and there is NO way anyone can argue that.

and dont say that he has been playing for less already, and we owe him. cat out performed shandon for 300K a year. so there is no way that 2.5 mill is under paid.

the most i could see us paying shandon is 4.5 mill, maby 5, but that would upset me. he deserves 3.5, and nothing more.

also as far as Shandon is concerned i really see him getting traded after the season, probably a sign and trade, but we definately could get a better SF, and we already have a better(equal to you Shandon lovers) SG in Mobley. if we could get Nowitski(I DOUBT IT) we would loose anderson.

on the PF side of things. i see Mo having a pretty good year. scoring 15 and getting close to 7 boards, maybe more. i do not see this warenting a ton of money either, but i would forgive management if they gave him 6 mill. they would be silly to give out 7 or more because Kenny will continue to improve. Kenny may show that he, and not Mo deserves the big bucks. we may end up letting the other teams fight over him.

if we get those 2 for 10 mill total, that would leave us about 2 mill left over, but the cap is expected to go up by 3.5 mill. the way i see it 5.5 mill is enough to improve at the SF spot.
maybe we could sell our souls for Odom.

    *PEACE

Cat did not out perform Shandon last year. Scoring more points doesn't mean that you're better than another player. Outside of Francis, Anderson was by far the Rockets' MVP.

And a rookie contract is not the same as someone taking far less than they could've gotten elsewhere to come here.
