Ok, here's my problem. I drive an 98 Expedition and its time to get an emission test. I took it in and failed the test. The print out says the catalyst, Evaporative Emission, and EGR system is not ready. I have been told that I need to fix one of these problems to pass the Emission test.I heard that to take care of the Evaporative Emission problems on The Expedition is to get a new gas cap, which I did.I took it in to get it looked at again today, and it failed the test again, with the same three problems. Does anyone know what I can do about this problem? Thanks for your help in advance.
BMW3, There really isn't a good way to get around the catalytic converter problem. Its an expensive fix, but if your emissions are failing, the CC is usually the main problem. Not sure what that means when it says the Evaporative Emission and EGR system is not ready. Perhaps it means you need a new EGR valve (maybe R2K can chime in as he has actually worked at a place that ran these tests). I would go to a muffler shop and get the CC fixed definitely. Then get the test redone. My guess would be that youd pass. PS - Alot of people will tell you to add Techron to your gas and then try. Based on my experience, this is not going to help you pass (unless you just failed by a hair), but for $5 bucks, its worth a shot.
Hey codell, good to see you again That was a great take on the situation, too. I wanted to add that in newer cars, the O2 sensor plays a bigger role in the functioning of other aspects of the exhaust system in that, if it weren't working properly, it would misappropriate usage of other components. And it's cheap and easy to do yourself, so you might want to try replacing that first for the hell of it. But usually, if damaged, that sensor would set off the "Check Engine" light because it's hooked into that OBDII system. And if it's really close to passing, like codell said, try adding some Techron. Even maybe changing out your fuel filter and getting your fuel injectors cleaned out. That's about $100 worth of crap, but it's great for maintaining your gas mileage anyways, so it'll eventually pay you back.
DT, Good to see you too. Haven't seen you around in a while. I was worried for a while because you disappeared for several months.
Thanks Codell and DallasThomas for the advice. I'm gonna try adding techron and if that doesn't work, I guess I'm stuck with fixing the catalytic converter or changing the O2 sensor. The check engine on my car comes on alot recently, so hopefully it's nothing expensive.
