Hello All.. I know we have a few auto mechanics here and I was looking at the 2004 Range Rovers. I only drive a few miles a day so gas etc. is really not an issue, but reliability/maintenance costs are questionable, especially for the Rover. I've heard all the horror stories about the older models, yet that new one is allegedly better and the car would be under warranty. Its just an amazing looking car and I don't drive much, so it would be fun to have it reliability wasn't a big issue.
Land Rovers in the past have always been considered one of the more unreliable makes (frequent breakdowns/repairs - earlier models had issues with rust). I don't know if they've improved on that in recent years, but if you believe JD Powers, they still suck. According to the latest Vehicle Dependability Study, Land Rover ranks ahead of only Kia in fewest problems per 100 cars. The survey they did covers 3 year old cars, so these were for 2002 models.
I had a 2000 LR Discovery. Not one problem - ever. Tough as nails. I think the QC issues were overlown by people who had to make repairs post-warranty. That ain't cheap & people b****. I'd trust 'em, just get the extended warranty.
Well the 2002 model was the older body style in which it was still British Electrical systems (I believe), but in 2003 Land Rover was owned by BMW so it has the BMW electrical system and a BMW engine/suspension. In 2004 it was bought out by Ford, so the 04-05's have a Jagaur engine and aston martin electrical system. I've talked to numerous people that have had the new body style and they are quite pleased and had limited number of problems, and i've talked to people that had the 1998-2002 models that were infuriated by the junk called Range Rover. I may buy a slightly used one that still is under warranty for the next few years (thats about as long as i'd like to own it). I'm contemplating that or a Porsche 911, which is pretty much the complete other side of the fence.
You and drapg must be twins. I think it's funny when people say "I'm looking at getting a honkin' big luxury SUV" or "a sports car". It's almost like they're saying, "I just want anything..." lol. I'm not knocking you, I'm just saying it's just funny... Porsches came out #1 on the same survey, btw.
Go w/ the Porsche.....just be prepared to spend 25-30% extra on top of MSRP for the usual options though - that's where they ding you. But it's still worth it. I like the Turbo...
I'm saving for a spaceship. I want to be George Jetson. Screw you landlubbers and your traffic jams!!!
If you want to impress your neighbors get the Range Rover. If you want Quality/Reliability go with the Lexus.
To be honest, I never was impressed with luxury SUV's. Land Rovers don't impress me at all. Lexus vehicles are so common now it's hard to be impressed. Now sports/exotic cars - that's a different story. Get a new Vette Z06.
I actually had a Lexus SC400 for about 6 years and it was the most reliable car i've ever had. That car even with 140K miles on it was a rock. I would drive that thing in Mexico, anywhere and everywhere. The two cars are really on the opposite side of the spectrum, but thats what my decision's boiled down to. I love the Porsche but don't really want to be percieved as a hothead from a business perspective and it is a little small. The car will be under warranty and its really a beautiful car.
I'm with you but A Land Rover, even with it's luxury status, will go over or through just about anything. They haven't left their off road herritage behind. That said... go with the porsche
I saw a Silver one at Memorial Park yesterday....it was awesome, but for halfa million i'd rather have a Porsche Carrera GT or an Enzo (wish I had that choice!). Actually I love the new mercedes CLS 500's. Those cars are just beautiful but i really don't believe in buying brand new cars. Also I think its a great time to pick up an SUV because of the gas prices scare. Prices are already coming down and I believe they will continue to fall. Because of this SUV sales have been horrible, so its easy to negotiate on price, that and i live 5 minutes from my office! Buy low-sell high!!
The SLR is actually $720k minimum when you go to the dealer now b/c of the heavy demand.....but at least it's not like Ferrari where it's by invitation only... Both the Porsche and Range are good choices....the Porsche will probably retain value better.....the Range will be fun to drive though....they're real smooth on the road and very comfortable...
I know it's not a "Range Rover" but I looked at the Lr3s a few months ago and really didnt like the back end of them and it drove kinda plastic like.. My boss just got a 911 turbo and let me tell you DAMMMMMMN!! If you are gonna drop that kind of cash sports car the 911 would be my choice after riding in that thing, but get a good color he got ugly forest green.. NASTY..
A Green 911 Turbo?? Ewwww. The annoying thing is that i've looked at some 2001-2002 911 Turbos (virtually no different from the 2005's), and it annoys me that so many are tiptronic. I don't understand how someone could buy a tiptronic 911 turbo. I was looking more at 02-03 Carrera's or maybe a Targa, but damn do those things maintain their value. I saw a White Range Rover while going to lunch today and it was just beautiful!
Not to call you out FD, but I just wanna remind you of that thread where you felt like getting organic from Whole Foods was too expensive. You end up getting one of these vehicles, and your ass better be eating healthy from now on bro
True! I am cheap where I need to be! I just can't justify spending twice as much on 'organic' foods and such especially when the lack of preservatives makes them go bad in half the time! To me its nuts! Then again other people probably think its nuts to spend that much on a car! Everyone has to have their luxuries!
