I see that Jay Williams, Mike Dunleavy, Caron Butler and a few other picks have already signed their contracts with their teams. I was wondering if anyone knew when the Rockets would be signing their players? Perhaps the Rockets are waiting until the World Championships in August so they can do a press conference with Ming? At any rate, is there any reason they can't sign them now....or are they waiting until they re-sign Francis? Does that make a difference? Any of those "in the know" have any info?? Chris
i was wondering the same thing. I would think nachbar will be the first to sign just because hes in the states.
Doesn't matter. The details are being worked out. The salaries are basically set. It is just a formality.
True, the salaries are pretty much set via the rookie wage scale but nevertheless..... It is always nice to have them "officially" under contract. And since others are signing now it raises the question on when the Rockets will "officially" sign their two first rounders. Chris
Sportsradio 610 is reporting that Boki will be signing in the near term (next week?). I would imagine the Rox phone bill is high enough, so I would guess they are waiting until August to get Ming's John Hancock.

Damn I'm good! The day I post about "when the Rockets are going to sign their 1st rounders" and a few hours later they sign Nachbar! Chris
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/1491614 July 11, 2002, 9:27PM Gain before pain for Rockets rookie Nachbar signs ahead of hernia surgery By MICHAEL MURPHY Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle Bostjan Nachbar will undergo hernia surgery today, but Thursday his bank account got a lot healthier. Nachbar, the 6-8 Slovenian forward who was selected by the Rockets with the 15th pick in the NBA draft June 26, signed his rookie contract, the first of the team's three draft choices to sign. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but under the NBA's rookie scale, the 15th pick is slotted to earn $1,082,500 this season, and salaries of $1,152,00 and $1,193,000 in succeeding years. Under the league's collective bargaining agreement, though, the Rockets are allowed to offer Nachbar, 21, a contract that is 20 percent above the slotted number, which means he could earn $1,299,000 this season. Nachbar, who plays for the Slovenian national team, spent the last two seasons playing for Benetton Treviso, leading the Italian power to the European Final Four last season as a starter. Nachbar averaged 13.7 points (shooting 60.4 percent from the floor and 37.4 from the 3-point line) and 4.1 rebounds in Italian League play, and 12.9 points and 3.7 rebounds in Euroleague play. "We were happy and excited to get it done," said Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson of Nachbar's deal. "With Bostjan back in town for his surgery, it was a good time to get it done. It went very smooth and easy. "We are very thrilled to have Bostjan here, and he very much wanted to be here, so it was an easy negotiation. And now it's on to the next project." And that next project is a big one -- Yao Ming, the 7-5 Chinese center who was the No. 1 pick in the draft. The franchise has sent a contract offer to Yao and his representatives, and a copy to the NBA, that secures his rights for the Rockets. "Yao has a copy of the contract, and we've already sent a copy to the league," Dawson said. "You have to do that within 15 days (of the draft), but we didn't waste any time -- I did it the next day." Also on the agenda are Tierre Brown and Oscar Torres, both restricted free agents; Tito Maddox, the second-round pick in last month's draft; and Steve Francis, who is eligible for a contract extension.
According sina.com news, http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2002-07-13/13285604.shtml , Ming will been signed very soon. The contract allready was sent to Ming, Ming's agent and NBA.
