Any idea on why we haven't seen the Yao and McGrady pick and roll?

It looked so unstoppable at some points against the Mavs in the playoffs last season, and I remember all of us saying 'it took a whole season for them to click, but the two have finally arrived as a real duo'...only to not see it at all this year. Why can't that be our bread and butter? Is there something in the X's and O's I'm missing that would make it so hard for us to run it?

Maybe they have that down and JVG is using the beginning of the season to incorporate new plays/strategies as options? I guess we need to figure out what kind of options we have and find out which players are worthy of wearing the Rockets uniform before the trade deadline.

They're trying to run it but it's not working as well. Teams are catching on and doubling Mcgrady off of it.

Two things, first Dallas is/was a horrible defensive team that defended it poorly in that series because they put in play the let Yao/T-Mac score all they want on the PnR and we'll stop everybody else and it worked.

Secondly, it is still early in the season and these guys are really learning to play together so the spacing hasn't been there to run the play nor has there been the hot hand to throw the outlet pass to keep the defense's honest to keep the opposing teams from doubling T-Mac.

I do look for the PnR play a bigger part in the Rox offense but we have to fix some of the problems we are having offensively right now. I just hope that the new guys and DW come around and we don't have a repeat of last year where the fix was to bring in new guys.

Texas Stoke and you are right. A lot of the times when we have run it, the other team has elected to trap tmac.

But I'm not sure though that I have seen the roll. Almost all of the time Yao is just setting the pick and not really rolling.

    This is simple math.

    Yao+post >>>>> Yao+pick and pop >> Yao+pick and roll

IMO, those plays in the playoffs were fools gold.

I'm not near a tape right now but....

Given Yao's foul troubles, McGrady's injury, opening the game and 2nd half with low post possessions, and the lack of FGA% from anyone not numbered 1 or 11 making it easier to trap the dribbler...would it really have made much difference? :(

to a certain degree of course, I do think we have to stick to what we have this year, and not keep trading out. I envisioned a slow start, and a slow start sans T-Mac looked a whole lot like early last year. I like what we have on paper, and though Stro, for the stretch T-Mac was out, looked worse than a clueless rookie, I think he'll come around. I don't know if he'll personify the word 'enforcer', something we've all been wanting, but I think he'll be a slight improvement over Juwan, which I'll take. I totally agree with sticking to our guns and letting these players mesh, and I'm pretty confident that's JVG's plan.
I do find it sad if spacing is the reason for Yao and T-Mac's inability to run the PnR. I really think that should have been pounded into the player's heads from day one. Obviously Yao's foul troubles have something to do with the opportunity to run it, but still, we should see it more. I guess our guards have to punish the opposition with an open j from time to time. I just know that last year, when they were constantly running it during Game # whatever in the playoffs, it felt nearly orgasmic. Watching our duo run it so flawlessly, it all felt so right, like our team had achieved a transcendence that fans of every other team in the NBA were dying to have themselves - that of untouchable talent and synchronocity. I want that feeling again, dammit.
Tonight, I want our guards to show up again. As always, they're the key.

Jeff is waiting for game 6 of the first round of the playoffs this year before unleashing the Yao-T-Mac pick and roll.
