I don't remember ever seeing a thread about fishing in here except for shark attacks, which doesn't count when we're not the ones doing the hunting. I just bot back from Port Aransas where we did some offshore fishing for red snapper. We also did some wade fishing in the surf for speckled trout. Both were pretty good and a fairly new experience. I even had a big-fish-that-got-away story out of the surf. I've always been more of a freshwater bass fisherman, but I'm finding myself addicted to the uncertainty of the gulf. I'm trying to get a feel for the best way to catch good sized trout next time I go down to the coast which will be hopefully soon. I'd also like to catch some redfish. I've never caught one. Anyway, let's hear from everyone that likes to fish and what your preference is for freshwater/saltwater and species. Also, tips for fishing and any good fishing stories. I'm sure that I'm not the only one to grow up with a love for fishing.
Went off shore (to the 32's) on Father's Day weekend and caught some good size kings, dolphin fish and even a sand shark. Were going to go try for a Bull or two but the boat we were with in a tandem broke down and we had to go back an hour early.
Fished freshwater for most of my life (like you, mostly bass). In the last few years I've really gotten into saltwater fishing. Being close to the shores of Long Island and New Jersey. But my absolute favorite and what I look forward to every summer (for the last 5 years) is our week long vacation on Martha's Vineyard. Then it's all about the Blue Fish and Stripped Bass! Now that is some fun fishing! We go up to the island the week after Labor Day when all the summer tourists have left and the island is completely dead! Perfect for fishing! Last year I caught 3 Strippers over 25 pounds each. But my fav is the Blues! For their size they are the strongest fish I have ever battled. And man do they taste good! Especially smoked. The biggest I caught last year was 18 pounds. But man! What a fight. Of course I was using a light weight freshwater bass rod with only 8 pound test line (I like to make it hard on myself ) but it was the most fun I've had landing a fish in years! Can't wait for September 4th!
Fishing salterwater all my life. I've also been fishing for specks lately. If that's your goal, then the absolute best way is live shrimp under a cork. Or, a D.O.A. shrimp. That's an artificial lure that you can get at places like wal-mart or academy. DOAs also need to be under a cork. If you want a bull red, try going to the end of a pier (ie. galveston fishing pier) and throw it as far as you can. Use a whole squid, or almost whole. I've had luck at surfside jetty, so give that place a shot. For wading, try san luis pass. A bit dangerous because it's a channel, so be careful.
Been fishing all my life, mostly saltwater in West Galveston Bay. In fact, before I got married, I lived in Omega Bay (one of those canal communities like Tiki Island and Bayou Vista). After marriage though, the commute was killing my wife (who works downtown), so we sold the bay house and the boat and moved to Pearland. Not having a boat started to get me down, so I just bought a new one two weeks ago. I had kind of looked around for that thread about long road trips to post my story in, but I never found it. Basically, I left Pearland Thursday evening and drove to Dallas. Went to bed around 11:00 and woke up at 3:00. From there, we drove straight through to Richmond Virginia on Friday and arrived there about two in the morning. Woke up at eight that morning and went to the boat store. I took one look at the trailer and spent an extra $1200 on the spot to have it upgraded. They did the work fitting the new trailer, and I took delivery about 2:00 p.m. With the new trailer and the motor extended, that thing added over thirty feet to my truck, and we trailered it straight through to Dallas--only stopping for fuel and a few pee breaks. We got to Dallas at around 10:30 Sunday morning, and I napped at my mother-in-law's for about two hours. My wife and I then drove back home to Pearland. What a road trip!!! Even after the trailer upgrade, I still saved about four grand off of the best price I found in Houston. In fact, this new boat was a better deal than some of the newer used boats I looked at. If ya want a great price on a boat, and you don't mind the LONG drive, I highly recommend Ed's Marine Superstore I took a look in their warehouse, and they had no less than 500 brand new outboards--still in their boxes.
I love to fish but haven't been down to Galveston in a couple years. My dad and I talked about it this weekend, so I'm hoping to make it out to the pier one day soon. What is the minimum strength of line that I need to fish for sharks/Bulls?
I love to fish but of course down there you guys can go freshwater or saltwater fishing fairly easily. Up here it's pretty much about bass, catfish, and crappie. I like fishing for any but I like eating them a whole lot more!
I remember for Nintendo, yes regular, Black Bass and Blue Marlin were fairly good. I haven't played any of the ones that they have out for newer systems like PS2, XBOX, and PC.
Ahh, the joys of living in Alaska. Kings, silvers, pinks, chums, reds, rainbow trout, arctic grayling, all of which I've gone after on flies. Done a fair amount of bait/spinner fishing as well. I'm planning on getting some king crab off Kodiak Island this fall, and taking an October steelhead fishing trip on the Karluk River. Other than catfish fishing at my uncles place, I haven't been fishing in Texas since I was 8 years old out in Corpus Christi Bay/Gulf of Mexico and a Hammerhead swam up by our boat.
I talked to my brother today and I think that we might head back to the coast this weekend. Last weekend was the family trip with kids and old people that can't walk more than 200 ft. to a fishing spot. Also, it was expensive because we rented a condo and went out to eat every night and all that. This time, it's going to be all about the fishing. We'll camp out instead of getting a room. Fast food should do it. The rest of the time, we'll just fish. It'll probably be too hot during the middle of the day, so we'll find something to do then, maybe check out the beach. Last week, the waves were to big to be fishing in but were nice to do fun stuff like body surf. I'm hoping that we can get away this weekend, we've both got to get it past our girlfriends. My brother's determined to catch a big redfish, so that's probably what we'll be going for.
I use to fish largemouth bass and catfish when I was younger, but recently(relatively speaking) I've fished for rainbow and brown trout in Colorado, sturgeon in the Columbia river inlet in Washington, and have done some black tip shark fishing in the Gulf. I've long been wanting to learn to fly fish though.
GOOD CALL!!! everytime i have ever used a Doa shrimp i always caught something, i bounce the shrimp on the rocks, the doas are a good lure, another good lure is those bass assassins , i think they make trout assassins too
Having just bought a house in the Catskills I have been told that I MUST learn to fly fish. Apparently the Catskills is the birthplace of fly fishing. We have a stream running off the back of our property so I guess I need to get cracking! But I'm really not a trout man. I likey the big fish!
Sounds nice. This talk about fly fishing is making me sick to my stomach that I can't get back to Colorado right now.
