Ok, here's the deal... right now, I go to Ithaca College for journalism with a minor in sport studies. I think that's a pretty good track for what I want to do eventually, which is sports journalism or broadcasting, and it's a good school and all. But, it's kind of expensive, which makes the fact that I don't absolutely love it a little more important, I think. I mean, I don't hate it there... I just feel like maybe somewhere with a lower volume of pot smoked per capita might suit me better. So my question is, do any of you know of some schools with journalism programs that can be reasonably sports-specific? Most colleges out there have journalism majors... but it seems like there are very few where you can actually minor in sport studies or some other, similar field. If I remember right, Miami (Florida) has got it, and I know DV's going to UT for the same type of thing, but that's a bit far away from me... somewhere not too far from good ol' Pennsylvania is what I'm hoping for... Anyway, I'm trying to get a feel for what's out there by looking around online, and this is one of the better resources I know of so, um, thanks!
Zac, I did a google search on "sports journalism programs" and Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Penn State both came up on the first page. In looking at both of them, it was hard to tell if they have what you are looking for, but if I was you, I would try all the in-state schools first before going to the ones out of state.
Aww, thanks Manny, very sweet of y... Hey, wait a second. You just want to help me switch colleges so I get a better connection so I can upload faster. Don't you? Don't you?! Seriously, I just duplicated your search and it looks like PSU just started a sports journalism program type of thing. I'll have to look into it. Thanks much. On another, slightly more discouraging note, another result that came up was, in part, "... Because there are no formal sports journalism programs at any universities in the United States,..." Maybe that's my answer! I have to go to... uhhh... Canada?
Or you can go to Bond University in Australia. I thought at first that was the place you go to become the next 007, but alas it is not. You could finally meet Smeg and have yourself a wild time, down under! Oh yeah, you are looking for places in PA. Seriously, PSU should be as close as any of having what you are looking for since they have had an icon running their football team for around 40 years now.
I didn't really expect there to be stuff overseas, but apparently there's that Australian one, plus some in England. If you're gonna go away, go far away, I suppose...
Don, You vastly underestimate my intelligence. Just because sports is my passion, and I treat it as such, doesn't mean I am not a very bright individual on the whole.
I have never underestimated your intelligence, DV. You definitely have been smarter than me on several trades...
Well thank you Manny, but I guess I get a bad rap because I really could careless about politics and a lot of world issues, and even though I have opinions on the subject, of course I prefer to talk about Sports. It's what I love to do. Zac, we had a 6 hour sports journalism class at UT but they canceled it due to lack of interest. Damn News people . I can tell you from experience, the best thing you can do is intern and try to find a college with student run media. At UT I am fortunate that we have one of the best college TV stations nationwide on campus(KVR-TV) and it's student run. So I am getting very good experience that way. Eventually I hope to intern at a TV and radio station each for a semester to build my resume. And to Don, I apologize for my reaction if your post was in jest, but it was more a reflex defensive reaction than anything. Especially concerning my intellect, something I take great pride in. Sorry if I jumped down your throat for no reason, just understand where I am coming from.
So has devestata. (kidding, kidding) I want to say Northwestern had a program like the one you're talking about (I did some research a year or so ago), but I'm not certain on that. Plus, Chicago might be too far away. But, if not, you might want to check into it.
Cool. I liked Northwestern when Gary Barnett was there. {/bandwagon} I'll look into that one, thanks... I have found one place that has a sport communications major where you can concentrate in print or broadcast... University of Indiana. Kind of surprised me, especially since from what I could tell it was about the only place in the country that had it. Indiana never struck me as an innovative/original type of state, but ya never know. What's a Hoosier? You see all these jackasses on Fox picking the Giants over the Eagles?
I said anything about your intelligence. In fact, you do seem quite bright. Don't be offended, like you said, it's your passion.
It doesn't matter where you go. It doesn't matter what your major is. It doesn't matter what your GPA is. (Unless you need certain degree program for industry specific job or advanced education). The job you get and the career you choose is 99.9999% dictated by your personality or your lack thereof. The income you get is 99.996754% determined by the size of your cojones when you interview and your level of poise and confidence. I will admit that for the advanced degree folks out there there is a difference in the size of schwartz and GPA and all of that crap. But most doctors, lawyers, CPA's, Dentists, advanced super smart Mojojojo braniac people are drab. NOT ALL, REFMAN! But most. And they have to work 80 hours a week to bring home the big bacon. If you want to get into sports journalism, or any field for that matter, major in acting and minor in graphic design. It won't even matter if you graduate or not. You will know when you are through. It will hit you. You'll be sitting in some theater tech class one day building a balcony for Romeo and you'll be like, "Dude, it doesn't matter if i have a 3.6. It only matters what my interviewer thinks I have." And you'll realize, "Man, it doesn't matter if I ever really did an internship for Sport Magazine. I tonly matters that I can show an interviewer that i did." And that is where your minor comes in. You learn how to photoshop away at documents. Cut, paste, blend, clone...You learn the fine differences between different weights of paper and what different printers will do to them. You find a well written article...a little scanner here, some Adobe there..PRESTO! You are published! You learn how to open sealed letters and reseal them with out anyone knowing they were opened...Oh wait...different class. Not that that is how I did it or anything... Chance PS-Seriously, I did finish at SFA with a fat ass 2.4. Majored in Sp-sp-speech. Minored in English. Almost half of my 136 credit hours came from CLEP tests back in the day at UT, though. Me real smart and real irresponsible.
Syracuse is supposed to be the Harvard of sports broadcasting and journalism. Is that pretty close to Ithaca College, or am I on crack? Anyway, Bob Costas, Charlie Pallilo and a whole host of well-known sports broadcasters went there. Here's a link to an article about their sports journalism program. http://sumagazine.syr.edu/summer02/features/feature3/ Hope this helps!
Syracuse is only about a couple hours north of IC, so you're right, but you can still be on crack if you want to be. Thanks for the link, quite helpful!
Hey nice thought, but DO NOT GO TO SYRACUSE!!! Sorry, but my bro just graduated from there last Spring, and he went there for a communications degree thinking the same thing when he applied--that it is the best journalism/communications school out there. Sadly, it was when he applied, but by the time he graduated, he knew he could've gotten a similar or better degree elsewhere. (For one thing, the school itself was first tier when he applied and second tier when he graduated). Sure it's a decent school, but the weather's HORRIBLE!!! It's always gloomy and rainy. If you turn on the weather channel now, or in the past week, you can see they had like 36" of snow, and that's not unusual. It's really not a great place to live for months at a time. But if you're looking for a sports journalism degree or whatever you might find, try looking at maybe NYU. I'm going there for the Sports/Hotel Management. I really don't know what it involves myself ! But good luck searching.
Oh and if you wanted to be an anchor or on television, I WOULD recommend Syracuse as a good place to go, but I WOULDN'T recommend going there for yet another reason. Most people in the communications/journalism department are the idiots that want to appear on camera (the ones whose Daddy's give them 3 cars and have multiple Upstate homes). That's honestly what Syracuse is best for, prepping people to be on TV. A few of their alum... Ted Koppel, Bob Costas, Marv Albert, uhh, you get the idea. Of course they went to Syracuse when it was highly respectable. And I go on...there was huge controversy over the commencement speaker last year, Giuliani. There were protests and almost riots the entire week. Quite interesting really. This has nothing to do with helping you, but when my bro went to get his diploma he was very clever. Since he disliked, no HATED the dean, he brought his cell phone up with him on stage talking with us the entire time. The administration really didn't like that. Oh and if that wasn't enough badmouthing, the women who go there are not good. All stuck up rude and VERY MUCH SO weird. It's like they're all from Ohio...
DV, Speaking of UT's broadcasting program, is there a whole lot that one would miss if they went somewhere else for a year, and then transferred over? I'm not even sure if that's where I want to go, but I'd rather stay in Houston for my first year. I'm debating right now whether I want to go to UT (assuming I get in), or Sam Houston...I know, not a great school, but they do have a nice journalism program, and it would be much cheaper.
Mmmmm...donkey balls... But seriously, isn't the college that Tom Green and everybody in the movie "Road Trip" went to named Ithaca? Any relation Zac?
