I have a 1995 Honda Passport that has about 112,000 miles on it. As of late (the last 2 weeks), the car seems really sluggish. I have to fight the damn thing to get it to 70 mph. When I turn the A/C on, the car becomes even more sluggish. The car was sluggish before, but now it's just funny. Anyone know why a car could be getting so sluggish in such a short period of time?
Have you done your routine maintenance besides the oil change? Like replace air filter, clean the carburator, etc?
Fuel filter, plug(s) is/are fouled, fuel injectors are clogged, air filter is extremely dirty, bad gas ~ some cheap fixes to chew on...
Turning the A/C on makes most cars slower. I had a friend who took his car in for an oil change, and when he got it back, he said it was really sluggish. He thought it was because they used a thicker type of oil. A couple weeks later, I ended up driving his car, and noticed the floor mat shoved up towards the front. I pulled it back out, gave him back the car, and thought nothing of it. The next day, he asks me what I did to his car, it's about twice as fast now! Apparently, the floor mat pushed up underneath the accelerator limited the pedal travel, and he could only push it in about half way, so his car was slow . Make sure you're not being a dumbass like my friend.
holy **** thats hilarious. that happens to me every once and a while and for like 2 seconds i'm thinking, what's going on with the acceleration before i adjust it. wow i can't believe he wouldn't notice that.
Aggie, are you seeing a check engine light? It could be any number of things, which way you look is determined by if your check engine light has come on. If your mat isnt under your pedal, next place to look is fuel related...fuel filter being the most likely culprit. bad gas can also make you lose power. btw....it is totally normal for your engine to experience power loss when the AC is on...you just dont normally notice it as much when your engine has full power.
This is the perfect path to follow, because it's cheap and most likely the cause. The first thing that came to mind was the fuel filter. I'd like to find an honest mechanic in NW Houston.
Out of those, the only one it could be is bad gas. I have changed the air filter, fuel filter, as well as regular oil changes. I even had a fuel system servicing done some time back. No check engine light comes on. If it gets worse, I guess I'll have to take it to the shop.
a note about most places "fuel system services" where did you get it done at? most smaller garages/chain stores dont do a true injector flush...they basically spray carb cleaner in the intake and dump a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank, and charge you for a fuel system service. To do a true injector clean, you have to have the full strength cleaner mixed with gas in a pressurized can, and hook it into the fuel rail and run the engine on that mixture....most dealerships do it that way(and some of your better garages)... clogged injectors could cause the symptoms you describe.
