Lately I've been thinking about the ABA. Wasn't Houston's team called the Mavericks? I went to a few games, but I was young. I remember they had a 5'4" guard named Willie Somerset who could fill it up, but I don't remember anyone else who played for that team. I want to say that some guy who played at UT was the coach: Scooter Somebody. It seems like the franchise moved somewhere during the second season. One of the basketball coaches in our school district tried out for the team but didn't make it. I went to a game here in NC about 1975: ABA vs NBA All-Stars. About all I remember is Dr. J. Can anyone throw any more light on this topic? Any good ABA memories? I loved that Red-White-Blue ball.
I've actually got some old ABA trading cards. Houston's team was the Mavericks. They also had a player named Art Becker. Slater Martin was their coach.
I have lots of ABA cards as well, including Julius Erving Rookie card. Found this site: http://www.geocities.com/~arthurh/ Mavericks site: http://www.geocities.com/~arthurh/Houston-Mavericks.html
excellent! I honestly, never knew that Houston had an ABA team! I actually never checked... the only thing I knew about the ABA was Dr. J and those RWB balls! thanks for the history lesson! rH
My old '94 SI Houston Rockets championship issue said that the final Houston Mavericks game in 1969 had a paid attendance of three. THREE? ...and you thought that attendance was pathetic LAST year
Thanks for the research. What a trip down memory lane. I recognize a bunch of those names. Small world-- they become the Carolina Cougars. I live in NC now. As I recall, Willie Somerset was only about 5'6" or so. I do remember Lavern Tart and Art Becker.
