TORONTO (CNNSI.com) -- Coveted free agent Antonio Davis has reached a $60 million deal to re-sign with the Toronto Raptors, Davis' agent, Bill Dufffy, told CNNSI.com's Marty Burns. The five-year contract cannot become official until July 18. As part of the agreement, Davis will not be included in any sign-and-trade deals. Davis, who is coming off a career year, had previously visited the Chicago Bulls and spoken with representatives of the Orlando Magic, who rang his doorbell at 12:01 a.m. on July 1, the first day teams were allowed to negotiate. The 6-foot-9 Davis, an eight-year NBA veteran with Toronto and the Indiana Pacers, averaged 13.7 points and 10.1 rebounds last season, both career highs. In his second year with Toronto, the club reached the Eastern Conference semifinals, falling to Philadelphia 4-3. It was the Raptors' deepest playoff run in their six-year history. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/news/2001/07/11/burns_davis/ ------------------ All hail Fadeaway's Cyberfish -- your 2000-2001 BobFinn* Fantasy Basketball League Champions!
Antonio Davis will definitely be a big help for Toronto in keeping Vince Carter in town. ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
It is too much money for this guy, but Toronto is the only team that can justify it, in my mind. I look at this contract as a downpayment on Vince Carter as much as a regular contract to AD. If they had lost Davis (and maybe even Jerome Williams) and Charles Oakley, that team sucks next season. If that team sucks, they are guaranteed to lose VC (I think). Since they managed to keep Davis, they have a much better chance at resigning Carter. And if that team loses Carter next season, it is only a matter of time until they go the way of the Grizzlies. ------------------ Rockets need power forward. Mo near now. Go near Mo. No Bulls bashing? I'm stunned. I'm glad we didn't at that kind of money. He'd be a Kelvin Cato or Juwon Howard type brick in 4 seasons. Don't get me wrong...I'd love to have him...just not at that price. ------------------
