From ESPN Insider: It looks like Antonio Davis's dreams of playing in the low block for Orlando were just that . . . dreams. A source close to the Raptors free-agent power forward told ESPN Insider Monday night that the Magic have told Davis that they are unable to clear enough cap room to offer him a substantial deal. In other words, if Davis wants to play for the Magic, he'll have to accept Orlando's $4.5-million exception. According to the source, the Raptors have refused to work with the Magic on any sign-and-trade scenarios and attempts to move players like Bo Outlaw and Pat Garrity to clear cap space have fallen flat........ Davis has several other options available to him, including returning to Toronto or signing with the Bulls. Neither situation is ideal. Both teams have enough money to offer Davis the max, but Davis would prefer to play in the states and he also would prefer to play for a contender. According to the source, Davis' agent, Billy Duffy, may begin exploring other sign-and-trade options with teams like the 76ers (see the Mutombo story below), the Spurs or Rockets..... Apparently, Davis received a phone call from Sixers coach Larry Brown on July 1. Brown apparently told Davis he is needed. To land Davis, the Sixers would have to put together a sign-and-trade deal. Given that Iverson and Mutombo are untouchable, any deal would likely have to include Tyrone Hill and Matt Geiger. Charles Oakley would just love that. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
I think that AD will be a great addition to the Rockets if they were to get him. ------------------ Stevierebel

Wow. I knew not everyone liked Mo Taylor, but I didn't think anybody would keep Kelvin Cato over the guy. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
lol! Okay, maybe not a s&t of Mo... I just think that the Rockets have to keep Cato if they pull in Davis (who would be effective for 95% of the time at C, but....). Also, does my memory serve correct, didn't someone post a report(was it Insider?) that said that the Rockets thought that Davis was more dynamic than Webber? If so, it sounds as if they may have been thinking of acquiring him as a Power Forward.. or they were just going to pair him with Mo in the frontcourt and sub Cato behind him. Works for me! BTW, there's no reason to think that the Rockets have to sign & trade. I would suspect that the Rockets contacted Davis... but I also have to assume that they are just waiting on Dream before making a decision one way or the other. Achebe, I posted the article about Davis and Webber that time... the comment was that on the whole market Davis was hotter than Webber, in terms of number of suitors. They said the Rockets were interested in Davis, but they didn't say anything about the Rockets view on Davis vs. Webber. Also, effective for 95% of the time? What team were you watching? I'd personally start Mo Taylor or Kenny Thomas at center long before I would start Cato. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Does anyone remember that the Rockets beat Toronto by 15 with Mo T at Center? And he scorched AD. C'mon...were talking $11.0M for 4 or 5 years! In 5 years AD will be as old as Dream is currently and his contract will be an incredible albatross. ------------------ Raef to Rocks in '01-'02! Achebe, Sorry about that... read your post too quickly. It makes sense now. I don't think they'd be obligated to keep Cato though. All Cato has going for him right now is that he has size, which Collier or someone from the CBA could match if you're worried about going up against big centers. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. In todays NBA you don't need a true center, except when you play the Lakers. Mutombo is not much of an offensive threat so a big center isn't necessary there. Mutombo can be effective (if he is healthy) but he is only 6'9 (maybe 6'9 1/2) and he is physuical so a big center would help vs him as well. So I think AD could line up as center and do fine, and just like the rest of the NBA be in trouble vs the Lakers. Of course it would be more ideal to have a shot-blocker at center, especially with the new zone D. Cat if Moochie is worth 4.5 mil would you give AD 11 mil? I like AD and know someon will give him that kind of money but personally I wouldn't pay a non-superstar 11mil. He would be a nice piece to our puzzle and would love him over Mo-T but not a that price (unless we can stick them with Cato in a S&T).
To bad Mo can't come off the bench, because I would love a frontline of Dream and Davis. But since that's not going to happen, a frontline of Mo, Davis and Griffin is a playoff team. This is getting more and more interesting! A week from tomorrow and the speculation mostly ends and we can get some REAL deals being done! ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
4chuckie, I don't think Davis is worth quite that much, but he is worth near it. Max players are usually superstars, but a player who can rebound, shoot the jumper, bang, and play center is hard to find these days. I think 9-10 million would be more appropriate, although considering his age I'm not sure I would offer that unless we could deal them Cato in a sign and trade. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. The Cat, I guess if there's an opportunity to get rid of Cato, then the team always has to take it. Gater, Davis had a bunch of DNPs before that game, and didn't really play well throughout January. Look at the body of work. Davis held his own against all Centers... Dikembe, Shaq, David Robinson, etc. I didn't realize that until I checked him against big and talls around the league. Sign him up! And just in case... get Oakley too!
It's one thing to pay Chris Webber $11 million. It is another thing entirely to pay that to Antonio Davis. Personally, if I were Toronto, I wouldn't offer him the max. If Chicago is stupid enough to do that (and they probably are), that's fine, but I doubt too many teams are going to be willing to swallow multiple years from Davis at a rising $11 million. I may be wrong, but that is an extremely large amount of payroll for a non-star player. ------------------ How the hell should I know why God would allow the Holocaust. these foo' players think that the free agent world is the same as when J Howard was shopping around - this is not even the same climate as when Pip came to Houston... these sucka teams are tired of dis jibba jabba - they know that players like C Webb cannot make the same money on another team, so they are no longer willing to S&T Webber for Maloney or some other "throw-in" - just to get something (a la the Bulls with Pip) - if these suckas don't watch out - they are going to run out of options cuz teams will not give up real talent to get an overpriced sucka star ! ------------------ "I find that the harder I work... the more luck I have" -- Thomas Jefferson "Weezie !!" -- George Jefferson
I think I'd rather see Geiger and Hill playing alongside Oakley! I can just hear the b****slaps connecting to the face of Hill now!!!! *SMACK* ------------------ My doctor says I am bipolar. I am going to get a second opinion. I have never had intimate desires for polar bears.

Jeff, why would Chicago want to sign AD? Unless of course they're shopping some of thei guys. It looks to me as if they have a logjam in at the 4. Maybe they'd consider shopping Fizer or Curry. ------------------ Mr. President. No man thinks more highly than I of three legged cows. They deserve to live. On my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of reason. Cows with three legs are good. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth : three-legged cows are better. They are better because the meat on them is better. The steaks are more tender. Three-legged cows tend not to wander as much. These cows could be the symbol of our country. The world would look upon us with great respect. They will want our cows and pay good money for them. The cows could symbolize freedom and hard work and three legs are better than four. They are meant for us; they can be meant for no other.
