WOW. Any details??? Who in the heck could Dallas have traded for him??? No way its Dirk. I dont think the CBA woud allow them to trade Jamison this quickly. If they traded Nash for him, then Dallas is stupid. Has to be Finley and others.
Is it just a rumor or are they saying its a done deal???? If its a done deal, then Boston got ripped off.
According to Donnie Nelson, it's a done deal. Welsch, LaFrentz, Mills and a 1st for Walker and Delk. While I won't miss any of the guys the Mavs just traded, Walker is perhaps my least favorite NBA player. Oh the humanity.
Dallas paper is confirming it... I don't know about this trade. I don't think Walker solves any problems for the Mavs. I think the Celtics did it because they felt a shake up was needed.
Who exactly is Dallas gonna play at center now? They should start Shawn Bradley, but what about when Bradley's out? The only other guy on the team close to center size is Dirk, and he's better off playing small forward than he is center. After Bradley and Dirk, the next-tallest guy on the roster is 6'9. They're going to have to give Dirk half his minutes at center if this is gonna work.
Well, the plan before this trade was to start Fortsen at center with Raef and Bradley backing him up, but now, that would leave Walker or Jameson on the bench. Hell, I don't know. I love getting rid of Raef's horrible contract, but Walker doesn't make this team better IMO.
From Dallasnews.com: Mavs send LaFrentz, first-round pick to Celtics 08:08 AM CDT on Monday, October 20, 2003 By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News The Mavericks continued to reshape their roster early Monday when they acquired Antoine Walker and Tony Delk from the Boston Celtics, president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. Headed to Boston are Raef LaFrentz and two players acquired in the off-season trade with Golden State, Jiri Welsch and Chris Mills. The Mavericks also included their 2004 first-round draft pick to sweeten the deal. Walker is a strong-scoring forward who could create a logjam in the front court - unless another deal is in the works. He, Dirk Nowitzki and Antawn Jamison, not to mention Eduardo Najera, would be splitting up playing time at the two forward positions. Delk will shore up the Mavericks at point guard. He’s been a part-time starter in the league for several years and will give the team an insurance policy since the only proven point guards on the team were starter Steve Nash and backup Travis Best. The deal makes sense from a financial standpoint for the Mavericks, who have the third-highest payroll in the NBA. Walker has a maximum contract that ends after the 2004-05 season. He will earn $13.5 million this season and $14.625 million next season. LaFrentz signed a seven-year, $69-million deal before last season. With Delk’s deal added in, the Mavericks will be relieving themselves of about $35 million in salary over the life of all the contracts. The trade talks got hot on Sunday and the deal was finalized early Monday morning after the Mavericks returned to Dallas from a preseason game in San Antonio.
Dirk, Jamison, Walker, Nash, Finley.... Who needs a center? Sure, they'll probably give up 110 a night, but there is not a single person in that lineup that you can leave open...
And Boston wins how many this season? PP takes how many shots? Dallas needs balls. For all their guys to shoot, that is. Wow.
how does this address Dallas' needs? seems to me they're trading away the kind of players they're short on.
MadMax, I don't think Dallas was trying to adress any "needs" with this trade. The Mavs were sending a message with this trade. They're saying, "We're going to score and run and shove it down your F*CK*NG throats, and there's NOTHING you can do about it!" For years, it's been "Defense wins championships". Well, the Mavs have countered with the age old adage, "The best defense is a good offense". I may be looking a little too deep into this, but I think that the Mavs are trying to change the NBA....That, my friend, takes some cajones gigantes...
I think its like some wierd attempt to match the lakers, you have four all star players? well now, we have five. I don't know how they're going to keep everybody happy; keeping jamison and walker on the same team would be difficult, much less with Nowizitki, Nash and Finley also neding touches.
Plain and simple, why does Boston make this trade? They trade an all-star caliber player for a bunch of scrubs? I don't understand. Was Ainge really unhappy with Walker? Is this Ainge's stamp on the team? As for Dallas. Sure it does not settle their CENTER needs but they are stock piling talent here. Walker, Dirk, and Jamison are all 20ppg scorers. They rid themselves of LaFrentz's horrible contract and have Walker's contract on the books instead that will expire in two years. Great move on Dallas's part. It will be interesting to see how this lineup will mesh on the court. The ONLY thing I would worry about if I was a Dallas fan was that Walker would be taking too many 3ptrs, 3ptrs that Dirk should be taking. So, is Walker or Jamison going to be the 6th man? I am assuming Dirk is not going to start at center every night.
Look for the Mavs to sign Steppania now that a roster spot has come open for Mills. More offense and another center. Later t2k
So whats preventing Dallas from starting Dirk at C, Jamison at PF and Walker at SF??? I mean, hell, its not like there are a whole bunch of dominant offensive centers who he is going to have trouble with. Even so, no one can keep up with that lineup on the other end. I can't see Walker or Jamison being a 6th man supreme.
Don't they have 48 hours to trade Walker to another team, possibly a team with lots of centers (Cleveland?) that wants a scorer like Antoine?
