If I'm not mistaken, these are the LTD numbers for the 3 platforms given by these reports (all shipped to retailers IIRC):
    Wii 20.13M
    360 17.7M
    PS3 10.49M

It is pretty nice that all 3 are making profit right now. I'm pretty surprised that Sony's gaming division was able to make a profit given PS3 losses (especially with the price cuts), although I guess they've been going crazy on reducing costs. Their numbers look a bit better than I expected, maybe due to the demand in Europe (and other regions?) I guess. That puts the PS3 slightly ahead of the 360 during its first year I believe, although this isn't really a great comparison.

I'll go ahead and post the others too:

Nintendo DS is at 64.79M worldwide.
    PS2 is at 125.4M.
PSP is at 35.87M I think?

Sony doesn't seem to give LTD numbers on the PS2 and PSP anymore, so I had to look back at the last few quarters and add them to the numbers at Wikipedia (which aren't the most up-to-date right now).

I still want to see what happens to the PS2 when it hits $99.

    No it isn't.

Without the PS2, Sony would be in the tank.

    Your statement is ludicrous.

So is it worth it to pay an extra $100 to get the 80G PS3?

Dude just get a Wii. I've had a Wii for a week and it's pretty awesome! Some games really get you tired tho, too many movements. On some games you really do get some exercise going.

The only reason for me to get a 360 was Halo. I didn't get a 360 cus I heard some bad feedbacks regarding the durability of the console. Too many "broken" stories.

All 3 companies use shipped numbers (probably rare to actually see "legit" sold numbers in this kind of report). They will sometimes ship WAY too many systems just to inflate the numbers, but this usually results in horrible shipments in the following quarters (see PSP shipments in 2005-2006 and 360 shipments in 2006-2007). As long as you know how to read them, it isn't all that different from actual sold numbers, although there are some annoyances.

I'd love sold-through numbers, but they'd be near impossible to get. It is hard enough just to get reports from the US, Canada, Japan, and (parts of) Europe (and these numbers are usually rough estimates). I try to keep up with them the best that I can, but sometimes it is easier to just look at the shipped numbers, which can more or less show the same thing.

FWIW, we'll see if Sony stuffed the channel with PS3s, although given the sales numbers I've seen, I would think that the LTD number would be a bit higher if Sony wanted to do that. Then again, they are reducing their forecast for the next quarter. That probably has to do with the fact that they had been keeping the same unreachable target and never reduced it in an earlier quarter though.

    What is this about?

The PS3 just finished its first year on the market, and I was throwing out the closest comparison out there just as a reference (numbers by themselves are sometimes meaningless). I admitted it didn't really mean much; I didn't even really go anywhere with it either, so I don't see how the statement is ludicrous. I didn't say it was selling better, that it would outsell the 360, or anything like that.

If you want PS2 BC, it is probably worth it, although you may be better off trying to find a 60GB PS3 if you can. Otherwise, I don't really think it is worth it.

The 80GB PS3 will probably be discontinued soon and replaced with a new SKU (possibly involving new price points for new and/or existing SKUs), so you may want to wait a bit on purchasing one if that was your plan.

You gotta realize some people aren't interested in playing lets say; Madden with a gimmick controller. Especially defense. I have a Wii + PS3, personally I spend all my time with the PS3. I do need Mario Galaxy though.

The supply of Wiis in your neighborhood stores is directly proportional to how much Jesus loves you and your surrounding areas.

the control still a "gimmick" huh? you'd think after market domination people would stop being so dense...silly me.

and madden is more fun on the wii because of the control. Unless you like pressing the same old buttons on the same old game since 2001. Madden sucks anyways, until they rebuild it from the ground up. and the versions for 360 and ps3 didnt get much better reviews.

But why do you mention madden and not the great games that are made for the nin? as you mentioned, galaxy, metroid, elebits, zack and Wiki, soon to be smash brothers, re4, zelda, NMH, etc

Absolutely it's gimmicky. You don't have to be offended by it. Some people consider blu-ray or online play a gimmick.

The main reason massive amounts of people are buying it is because it's different than a normal game system, or at least the kinds they are familiar with. That's a gimmick. It's not derogatory, it is what it is.

i guess, but it has a negative connotation, especially how you used it. Its like saying ps3 with its gimmicky shiny graphics and gimmicky homepage, or gimmicky lack of quality games ;)

I don't know if that really is a gimmick. That's like saying any kind of product innovation is a gimmick. The only reason people are buying the iphone is because it's different from the [fill in the blank regular phone]. It's just not true. Especially if you consider that plenty of people are buying it in lieu of buying the traditional game systems (PS3, 360).

At first, it was certainly gimmicky. But as the reviews came out I think people realized its not a gimmick...its a legitimate product innovation that is now just a different, but equally fine way of playing video games.

I think that's where he took offense (even though none was intended).
