I'm going to be in NYC over the summer and am hoping to find a place to live. I am blissfully ignorant of the city, so I'm pretty unaware of the decent areas. All I know is that I'll be working in midtown and would like a place in Manhattan that I can get to easily.

I've spent some time on craigslist, but that's a pain in the butt. It seems like those places are gone very quickly. I'm not looking for much...all I want is a small studio that I can get to and from work and bars relatively painlessly.

Anyone have any suggestions of areas of the city and/or places that can help with the search?

    Thanks

Well, I would like to keep it under $2K, but based on the listings I saw, I was targetting around $1500. Is that reasonable?

What months do you need? I'm actually moving out but wouldn't mind doing a sublet for the last few months as I'd be vacating otherwise.

I'm starting up work on 6/20 and will be done on 8/26, so I was thinking June 1 - August 31. Because my school year goes through ~6/6 and I'd like to take a vacaction in between school and work, I have some flexibility on the move-in date, though.

When are you planning to start your worldwide tour?

6-17 That actually might work, I am not sure what month my lease ends it is either July or August - if it is august that would work

Anyway I live in Stuyvesant town on 18th & C or thereabouts - I pay about 2 g but since I am over a barrel on rent I would cut you a sizable discount. It's a big-ass (for NY) one BR. I will check on my lease stuff if you are interested.

Sounds like the timing might be a little tight, but I'd certainly appreciate the help. I can't seem to e-mail you through the board, so try e-mailing me at vch712 at yahoo dot com. That's a spam e-mail address, but if you can use that, I'll respond from my real address. Thanks.

Landy: that seems to be in line with what's on craigslist. And you hit it on the head - I'm not going to be there too much, but I need a place to sleep, shower and keep my clothes.

Any other tips, info or suggestions people have would also be appreciated.

i really suggest you look for a sublet. the only trouble with that is that you're not actually in the city to check out the property. i really suggest you come a few days in advance and stay on someone's couch for a few days, or a cheap hotel. look up properties that are ready to be sublet and inspect it. if you like what you see, might as well put money down. either that or have someone you know check out the property. real estate here is so competitive that you have to take it as soon as you like somethin or it'll soon be gone.

    try a site like www.sublet.com

    good luck.

You should also get in touch with a few of the universities in the city. They know all about summer sublets.

    Just an Idea

    Sam -

Not sure if you decided you weren't interested or if you just missed my post. In case you are still interested, I am still looking around for a home and will actually be in NYC on Friday to see some places. If possible, I'd love to check out the apartment or discuss (via e-mail or phone) what the place is like.

    Thanks

And that's where I am right now; chose it over Columbia dorms because of better location.

I've got a GREAT apartment-style suite on a high floor with a view of the Williamsburg Bridge. Don't know about the dates available at either place that could accomodate TL, but it's worth looking into.

Is it really? Or is it that you have to take a class or some odd rule like that. THere's still plenty of housing available as far as I know...

    On another note...
I just got back from walking from Washington Square to down broadway into parts of Soho, Little Italy, and lots of Chinatown; around Grand and Canal Streets a few times, Museum of Chinese in the Americas...then all the way down Broadway further walked around the WTC site for the first time...down to almost Battery City park area, then around through Wall Street and back up Broadway.

There was a film crew at Water and Wall Streets with an old classic Checkered cab; couldn't figure out what they were filming for, but I did get a pic of it because I really liked that car.
