another chinese player

I am not sure that the Chinese players aren't a case of massive media 'over hype'.

The Chinese national team, at International level, hasn't excelled to any great degree. Only just over a year ago, a team featuring Yao Ming and the guy now at Dallas, was pretty heavily beaten by our Australian side...and we aren't that good

 

This guy was already cut once by the Nuggs this year. He may be a decent player to have comming off your bench but he's no stud.

 

Does anyone know what happens with these guys salaries ?
Do they have to turn it over to the chinese govt ?

 

Good player. Won't dominate, but will put in solid minutes in the post. The anti-Keon Clark, very consistent, not at all spectacular.

Oh and Batere wasn't really "cut". We had to let him go due to his requirements to play for his national team. Only reason he was left off the roster was because they had an agreement for him to re-sign with us when he could.

menk should at least give us another big body to throw around. might be decent if given time. at least gives us a few more fans

i've watched the guy in china's bball league

he's easily the worst of wang zhi zhi and yao ming... he's a bruiser without the moves and coordination or overall flow.
it'll take a few nba training years to get this guy a serious contributor in my opinion

I'm a Mavs fan and thus interested in Wang and his personality. I've seen you mention before that there were stories of Wang acting like an bigshot in Beijing with girls all around him and stuff. I'm just curious if you have any more insight into him or his potential in the NBA. He seems smart and skilled and athletic enough to be role player, but his heart has yet to show itself. Do you have any more anecdotes or rumors about him that would tell more about the kind of person he is?

Also, another question about Wang and the other Chinese players -- since the 9/11 tragedy, visa restriction crackdowns have revealed the ages of many int'l pro baseball players to be greater than what they'd been telling their parent teams. Minor leaguers who said they were 19 are really 22, for example. What is the chance of Wang or the other Chinese players being much older than they are telling their NBA teams? Wang's age has fluctuated greatly and recently settled on 23 years old, I think. Might he be older than that? Maybe even CONSIDERABLY older?

Oh, and Rocket Fans, you may ask yourselves the same sorta questions regarding Torres.

Oscar is from Venezuela. The problem of the ages in baseball is (so far) only with Dominican players.

 

oh by the way, i forgot to add that Mengke Bateer isn't exactly chinese (you can tell from the name as well). he's from inner mongolia and plays in the chinese basketball league.

the stories of wang with some gals was in Shanghai (i have friends who live there and often see wang and the local organization that he plays for there). you can imagine he's a gal magnet because of the possible cash and fame he could bring in as a chinese player in the nba. His payroll however mostly goes to the CBA or chinese basketball league and is actually quite a good contribution since sports leagues in china didn't receive too much and wasn't really commercialized until of late.
(no way are college players or even professionals over there treated with cash flow like they are here... instead it's usually the national pride of winning for your country that is the prime motivator still)

to answer your questions franz, i think the age fraud isn't likely. as corrupted as china seems to many americans , from birth you're told to hold ID and it's checked often and everywhere (so any check up on wang's past could easily verify his age) ... i don't really see why they would for players like mengke, wang and yao ming. wang in his time with the bayi rockets has been short and players with talent are recruited from college/sports facilities that train at a very young age. i'd be suprised if he was actually older than his listed age.

as for wang's ability to become something big in the nba... i can't really answer that... it's tough to gauge because the nba is of course so different from the CBA and his social integration is a huge part of it. i've heard some encounters with him as being and looking like a big kid but as well as being adaptable and learning and basketball sharp. when he was on the floor in the CBA (and it's carried to the nba), he's still got a solid flow and understanding of what to do in a position - you'll see him look around and stutter in his step for a moment and maybe still then do the incorrect thing. wang has a good shot, freethrow shot and an array of baseline moves was his forte. he definitely wasn't used to the nba's defensive tenacity/movement when he entered however and i don't know if he's adjusted to it yet.

i don't have any other anecdotes on wang... (i've seen yao ming get 10 + blocks in several games though and i know a tidbit about jordan from someone who plays ball with him regularly that i shouldn't even be mentioning )

Thx, crossover. Every little bit helps when we're talking about such cultural differences. I echo the hesitation you see in Wang sometimes, I think that's what I meant by 'heart.' He's really indecisive, and thus I wonder if he'll ever understand that alot of the NBA game is about letting 'em drop low and banging 'em around a little.

Hey, he's played like 60 games in the league, and spent most of that time on the pine, so I 'spose I should give him a learning curve like any rookie, shouldn't I? I think his best game ever was just a few weeks ago in NJ when he played crunch-time and influenced the outcome positively with his aggressiveness and shooting eye. Glimpses like that make us Mav fans wonder if he could become a sort of 7-1 Chinese microwave for the Mavs.

The Mav's gotta go, and it'd help if Wang would get up and go wid 'em.
