You's guys gave such good advice in the other apartment thread, maybe y'all can help me out with my apartment problem, too. Though I've been living with my girlfriend for about 2 years now, we never notified the leasing office of that fact. I just sort of moved out of my old apartment, and moved in to hers. As far as the leasing office is concerned, only my girlfriend lives there. So she's about to be up for a lease renewal pretty soon, and I figure that would be a good time for me to come clean and notify the office that I am a resident (or, "I would like to be a resident") there, fill out the paperwork, go through the approval process, and become a "legal" resident of the apartment complex. Here's the problem I see. In the lease, I think it says something like, no other people can live in the apartment for a certain number of days without notifying the leasing office, otherwise you are violating the terms of the lease and bad stuff can happen to you. So, do I: a) come clean and notify the leasing office that I've been living there for 2 years, and risk my gf getting in trouble for violating the lease? b) try to lie and say that I just recently moved in, and haven't lived there longer than the allowable time spelled out in the lease? Problem with this is I changed my driver's license address like a year and a half ago to my girlfriend's address, so I might not be able to lie to them and tell them that I've only been there a month or so. Also, when I fill out the application, what do I put down for my address for the past two years? c) do nothing and continue living there without letting the leasing office know?
I see no reason why you should tell them unless they confront you on the fact...unless you just feel the need to be honest.
But...what about the two year (and counting) gap in my rental history? I'm worried that that might come back to bite me if decide to get my own apartment later on, so I'm thinking nip it in the bud now before the gap gets bigger, and makes things worse (not sure how though?). Any leasing people out there with any advice? Should I be concerned? Do these types of "discrepancies" in your rental history mean much when applying for an apartment?
I don't think they need your liscense as far as I know. r95 has the right idea, but I don't think the truth would hurt you. They can't evict your gf especially if her lease is running out. Or get another apt. I'm an apt. locator, and gap in rental is no biggie. Just say you lived with your mom. Now, if you owe another property money.........
Sorry to revive a dead thread. Apartments like to get renewals. It is much, much cheaper for them to get a current resident to renew then to have to replace that resident. Assuming your girlfriend was a good resident who paid rent on a fairly regular basis, they'll want her business and won't want to jeopardize that to complain about you living there. I think that language is mostly there to protect them from liability anyway. Since you haven't caused any trouble, why should they care?
Don't even worry about it. As far as landlords renting you an apartment goes, all they want are your Benjamins. If you have a decent job, and the apartment is available, you are in like flynn.
I don't see a problem with telling them...how are they damaged?? What have they lost? There's breach and then there's BREACH! I don't see them giving you or her a hard time about it...more likely than not, they'll just be happy to have you renew.
