So what do you UT fans think of this?

(10/14/03 - HOUSTON) — The Red River shootout could be headed south.

That's if Reliant officials get their way.

The Red River rivalry has been played annually at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas since 1929.

But the schools are threatening to pull out of their contract with the State Fair of Texas and go home-and-home if the city of Dallas, State Fair and other private groups don't come up with enough money to keep the game in Dallas.

Houston television station KRIV reported Monday that Reliant Stadium officials have begun talks with the schools.

Reliant Stadium is home to the Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The Super Bowl will be played here in February.

The current contract calls for Texas and Oklahoma to hold their matchup at the Cotton Bowl through 2006.

The schools can opt out whenever they want.

It just seems wrong to have it anywhere but the Cotton Bowl during the Texas State Fair.

Even if Texas Stadium is replaced by Jerry's 100,000 seat pleasure palace, it would seem wrong to stage the Red River Shootout there.

But that Cotton Bowl is a hole.

It's unlikely that Dallas won't come up with the $350K, though, to placate the schools for now.

A dream come true! Having the game in Houston would be awesome. Man I hope this actually happens. :)

And if OU fans hate traveling three extra hours, sucks for them. You can have the best football team, but the location of OU will forever suck. you cant have it all.

Obligatory "Do we really want those carnies invading our town" post.

Isn't Reliant much smaller than the Cotton Bowl? Tickets would be even more of a premium than they are now.

I think Reliant seats 70,000 and the Cotton Bowl seats 75,000.

Regardless, I don't see how OU would let his happen. Houston is practically UT's backyard. Factor in how much more difficult it would be for OU fan to get here and OU's preference would be for it to stay in Dallas.

The Cotton Bowl has 71,500 seats, according to the Dallas Morning News article on the current bru-ha-ha.

Reliant Stadium is supposedly going to hold 72,000 for the Super Bowl, isn't it?

There were talks of having it at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

There would be like 120,000 people there.

No way UT would agree to that. One game in Norman, one in Houston?

I want the real problem to be addressed: ticket prices.

Very few sporting events should cost over 200 bucks for a general admission ticket. And one whose primary fanbase is college students certaintly shouldn't.

These people need to realize who the real fans of these schools are, and make tickets accessible to them.

I love UT athletics and UT football in particular, but once I graduate this May or the following December, I probably won't be able to go to the OU game for awhile, as long as ticket prices remain as outrageous as they are.

It's a shame if you ask me.

Woah, you're kidding, right? Even our stadium (OU's) seats 85,000. I had no idea Reliant was that small. And to think, I been bragging to all my friends about how huge it is.

Guess you can't always judge a stadium by how it looks on the outside. :(

Also, pertaining to the thread topic, no way can I afford to drive the extra time/distance to Houston and be fine. Don't they know we're still college students with other obligations? With Boren no longer giving us another day off for winning the game, that would be really tough.

Well, Reliant is bigger than the stadiums both in Austin and Norman. It just doesn't have as many seats. But square footage, stadium footprint, etc. Reliant is bigger.

Apparently, roughly 70,000 seats is the optimal NFL seating configuration. Most of the new stadiums hold just about 70,000 people, usually with some sort of expandability to 72,000 to 75,000 for special events like the Super Bowl.

According to the Daily Texan, the Cotton Bowl only seats 71,500. Both UT and OU can seat 80,00+. If UT and OU go home and home, each town will get approximately 27,000 ppl from the other school and Austin gets about $14 million and OU gets about $9 million from revenues associated from the game.
