Tearful Smith testifies 'everyone hated me' -- By BILL MURPHY -- Copyright 2001 Houston Chronicle

..."She (Smith) said she was not told in May 1995 that doctors believed her husband could survive only another six to 12 months. When asked why she was not told, she replied: "I only know one word, and that's 'Pierce,'" she said. Smith also said she believed that if she had been allowed to care for her husband, he would be alive today.

On Monday, she denied selling $4 million worth of jewelry given to her by her husband and then reporting the items stolen or lost. "Did you lose any of it?" asked Lee Ware, E. Pierce Marshall's lawyer. "I would hope not," Smith said. "But I used to be a real ditz, so it's possible. But I really don't think I would lose my jewelry."

She said her late husband bought her the jewelry, which she carried in a handbag on a plane flight in 1994. But after the plane landed in Los Angeles, Smith testified, she was so intoxicated that she spent the night at a bodyguard's apartment. She reported the jewelry stolen when she returned home the next day.

I wonder what had her bodyguard so distracted that he wasn't keeping an eye on her $4 mil worth of jewelry?
