Dad says teacher gave a bad lesson by showing bootleg version of Shrek film to 5th-graders

    By JIM FITZGERALD
    Associated Press

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — He doesn't want to be an ogre about it, but the father of a fifth-grader thinks teachers are wasting time when they show movies in class — and if the film is a bootleg, he says, "That's a really terrible lesson."

Tim Trewhella, 46, said his 10-year-old daughter reported that her class watched the animated movie Shrek the Third on Tuesday and recognized it as the fairy-tale hit still showing in theaters.

"A friend hooked me up with it," teacher Lovell Quiroz said, according to the girl.

Peekskill schools Superintendent Judith Johnson issued a statement saying administrative approval is required before a video is shown in elementary school and "if a pirated video was shown it is in violation of district policy." An investigation was under way, the statement said.

An attempt to meet with Quiroz at the school was foiled by a security guard who ordered a reporter off school property.

The Motion Picture Association of America says major American movie studios lost $6.1 billion to piracy in 2005, 20 percent of that in the U.S.

"I don't want to see the guy hung for this," Trewhella said. "I would just like him to apologize."

Trewhella also says that what really bothers him is how often teachers show non-educational videos in class, bootleg or not.

"I run a candy and toy store," said Trewhella. "I completely understand about entertaining kids. But it has its time and place."

He said going public "might be making this unpleasant for the school district. But as a taxpayer and a parent, I don't want my dollars going for movies. It's the teacher's job to make the educational stuff interesting."

The teacher will be lucky if he doesn't get fired and/or sued by the studio.

It was probably one of the 5th graders who got him the bootlegged copy.

The teacher is a total choad for showing a bootleg movie to his kids.

The parent is a total choad for making such a big deal of it, costing the guy his job, and splashing across newspapers.

(do people still say "choad" ?)

the teacher should be fired for being too lazy to come up with an in interesting way to teach the curriculum and resorting to showing the kids a movie instead. he shoudl be fired for being a bad teacher.

My mother was ideologically committed to the public education system. Before coming to the States, she had been a teacher and a school principal. She put up with a lot of crappy teachers, facilities, etc, here for a while but eventually could take it no longer. The last straw was when my sister came home from school in the 8th grade and told her they watched soap operas in English class. It was all private school after that.

We saw that in 9th grade. Our teacher told us about it in advance. We were all ready to see something. We were dissappointed when it lasted about a second.

In my spanish 1 class in high school, we watched a show called "Que Pasa USA" for about two whole class periods a week. This teacher would often take naps under his desk. he eventually quit in February to focus more time on his underground gambling ring. We didnt have a teacher for over a month so that was pretty cool. The guy in this story didnt do anything wrong. Who cares if it was a bootleged movie, who has honestly never boughten a bootelegged movie?

I don't care that it is a bootleg copy, but what educational purpose does showing a Shrek film serve? At least show some random documentaries that get people thinking.

Apparently Spanish wasn't the only class where your teacher took naps.

I'd have to say publicity. He's getting his 15 minutes of fame. Same thing as that judge with the pants.
