I am looking for a contractor to add a space on top of my garage so that I can have a walk in closet in the master bedroom. I was wondering if its worth signing up on Angies list to find an honest/professional that isn't basically going to try and rob me (both on price, and also trying to jack stuff from my house) Any advice or ideas would help... Also, if any of you have done something similar, do you know how much it would approximately cost?
I have no advice, but I just wanted to say the first thing that popped into my head when thinking about you doing home improvement projects is the image of you duct taping your gas meter (?) during Hurricane Ike. That was priceless. Rep for making me laugh all over again.
lol, that was during the freeze last year. I should post the reason I need a contractor, I kinda of tried a DIY project with the closet and ended up with a minor disaster zone... So ya..
It started out with me just needing extra closet space. So I decided to switch my rods to 2 different levels, instead of going with just the shelve/rod layout. This is what I ended up with after a days worth of youtubing and Homedepot... Spoiler Yes, that is a non alcoholic drink....
A week later I decide to complete the rest and move the original rod up and thats when it gets out of control. Spoiler Spoiler I also learned, not to mess with electrical stuff, that **** hurts when you get shocked. Spoiler
Yes, Angie's list is worth it for you. Don't make any more DIY efforts on that closet. I would help you with it but not in Houston right now. Get several quotes off Angie's list and don't just go for lowest price, you want it done well.
Thanks, I was just wondering if anyone had used Angies list before, and whether it would just be easier/better to get recommendations off cluthfans/other forums.
Angie's List is awesome. You can save the annual membership fee in headaches if you only book one job a year. As a contractor (unfortunately not one in the Houston area or one who could help you with your project), Angie's List has been invaluable. We choose to differentiate ourselves from our competition by quality, and certainly not by price. We are typically more expensive than our competitors but we have won Angie's List's Super Service award for 5 years straight. It helps us find that portion of the market that we cater to (people willing to spend a little more to make sure things get done right). We get roughly 1/3 of our new business from Angie's List. Personally, I love it - a great way to read (mostly) legitimate reviews about contractors.
Never used Angies list but if you want a recommendation check out TCR Construction: http://tcrconstruction.com/ We used them twice. Once to build a covered deck and second time to turn our garage into a room. Got very reasonable quotes both times and happy with the work.
Adeel, the thought of you doing any DIY home repair after the gas line/duct tape incident has me equal parts frightened for your personal safety and rather awed at your 'eff it; ima do it anyway' attitude.
I use Angie's List. It doesn't mean you won't ever run across a dud of a company but it'll give you an idea of where to start getting quotes. Whereas if you didn't have it, you wouldn't even know where to start other than soliciting friends and forums such as this. Which I think is a great way of finding people too, btw.
Also, some companies give discounts for Angie's List and that would pay for the membership in one shot.
Thanks, I had almost signed up (Only 3 dollars a month) but then the bastards tried to add the one time 10 dollar joining fee. Screw that, shady business practice of bait and switch. Not getting my money.
Having had bad contractor and good contractor experiences, anything you can do to avoid a bad contractor is well worth it. A $10 sign-up fee plus $36 bucks for the year is insignificant compared to the costs, hassles and headaches of a bad contractor. I've not used Angie's List before, but given the reviews of people who have on this thread, I think it would be well worth it for you. While a bedroom over a garage might not be the same as building a new kitchen or bath, it isn't simple stuff, and I would consider it a major renovation project that has the potential to get out of control with a bad contractor.
