Astros just announced during the Brewers game today that Andy Pettite was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to his last start on April 7th. Pettite suffered a strained elbow on a checked swing during an at bat on April 7th. Apparently, an MRI showed no serious damage. Paging Carlos Hernandez.
Injuries are the only thing that can keep this team down. Lets hope he gets good treatment, and is able to come back strong. It sucks that once again, one of our pitchers has become injured due to something OTHER than pitching. 1.) C. Hernandez jeopardizes his career by sliding head-first and tearing his rotator cuff. 2.) R. Oswalt strains his groin last year on the basepaths. 3.) Pettite strains his elbow on a check-swing.
Well, I thought Carlos Hernandez would be called up.... turns out they're calling up Brandon Backe from New Orleans.
Yeah, it will be Backe. ESPN.com news services MILWAUKEE -- Houston Astros pitcher Andy Pettitte has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow, the team announced Saturday. The move is retroactive to April 7. Pettitte's injury occurred while checking his swing while batting during Tuesday's game against the Giants. An MRI, performed Thursday, revealed inflammation in his left elbow and a strain in his flexor tendon. Pettitte, 31, made his Astros debut on Tuesday, allowing six runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3. He was signed by Houston as a free agent in December after nine seasons with the Yankees. The Deer Park, Texas, native was 21-8 with a 4.02 ERA in 33 starts last season in New York. Pettitte, with a 149-79 career record, has been a durable pitcher during his career. He did start a career-low 22 games in 2002, but remained healthy enough to start 33 games last season for the Yankees. The Astros added ex-Yankees Pettitte and Roger Clemens to their rotation during the offseason. Clemens' Houston debut went much better than Pettitte's, with the Rocket beating Barry Bonds and the Giants on Wednesday.
They still could make another move to bring up a starter later... this gives them the luxury of having another arm in the pen until Tuesday. Roger can start on Monday now with full rest. We need a starter for tuesday, however.
Elbow problems on his throwing arm. This sucks!! Hopefully he will be able to come back from it and it won't effect him all year.
Agreed... in fact, when you bat left handed, a lot of the strain fall on your RIGHT elbow, not left. But, since its his flexor tendon, it is definitly possible. Looks like Andy did too much "muscling up" when he was at the plate...
yankee fan told me month ago that andy has elbow problems and that's why they didn't offer him more... this sounds like it has nothing to do with past problems though so I'm going to have to just ignore him for 15 days
ill put my money on one of the bullpen guys makin the start....ie Duckworth of Fernandez.......shouldnt be that big a loss esp. for a short time.....we got alotta starters who are more than capable of pitchin a gem......would love to see Hernandez pitch tho.....
Had we not gotten Clemens, this injury would have decimated us. But, as it stands, we'll still have a 1-4 better than most team's 1-4. That's damn impressive. When he comes back, give him a fungoe bat and tell him not to swing.
Maybe that's why he looked so upset when he didn't get a hit. I was thinking wow he is taking this batting awfully serious. Maybe he shouldn't swing
The main reasons I was asking, we got tickets for next Sundays game with Clemens pithing, I got the tickets way back in Feburary thinking there wouldn't be any injuries so soon.
I would guess Duckworth gets the start. I'm happy with what they're reporting; this injury could be a lot worse.
Apparently, Knuckso Fernandez will be getting the start. Now this just pisses me off. We have 3 or 4 other guys who give us a much better chance to win that Fernandez. Give Hernanzdez, Buchholz, or even KoKo a crack at it???
Buckholz just pitched the AAA game on Friday, so there's no way he'll be able to go by Monday or Tuesday. Koko is much more valuable in the pen right now... given that Stone and Fernandez can't seem to get anybody out. Carlos is just coming back from shoulder surgery... and he's yet to even pitch a AAA game, let alone a MLB game. Let him get a few more starts under his belt, and I gurantee you... if we get another injury in mid-season, he'll be the first one called up (granted, if his numbers are decent). Jared isn't the best of pitchers, but he's the best option we have right now. If he's as healthy as he says he is, he can be average-decent knuckler. He sucked outta the pen the other day, but starting is a whole different deal... he'll be ready to go. Plus, our offense better be ready to shalack Woody Williams again, like we did last September. If we give Jared a decent lead early, the Cardinals will be swinging away (and hopefully missing) on the floater.
Since it is so early and not an urgent situation, could player options come into play in this decision? How many options does a player like Carlos have left?
