Andre Johnson missed first ota cause he's unhappy with contract that has five years left. from McClain's twitter...
Sounds dubious. Andre has always been a real level head on this team. That he would suddenly start b****ing about a contract that he signed seems very out of character.
He's not being paid what he's worth when you compare what Fitzgerald is making, but it doesn't seem helpful for him at all to voice any displeasure about it when he has 5 years left on his deal.
It is from McClain, probably among the least reliable sources in Houston (and the most irritating). Yet, I guess it raises a slight eyebrow if any further reporting is done on it by a reputable writer.
Looks like Smith confirmed his absence... RT @SportsTalk790: Andre Johnson's absence at 1st OTA is described as being unhappy w/ contract per GM Rick Smith
When you're on a mediocre team, the money better be enough to make you forget about the rest. He probably realized that this is his last chance to get a major restructure - the new CBA won't help his situation out at all, and I highly doubt he commands a big contract in 2015. Evan
So many players b****ing about their contracts though this decade. Andre doing it surprises me a little bit. Are we REALLY underpaying him that much? Surely he can still feed his family with his current contract.
posted this in the offseason thread too, but found his numbers for the next few years on his contract. 3/3/2007: Signed an eight-year, $60 million contract. The deal includes $15 million guaranteed. 2010: $5.8 million, 2011: $6.8 million, 2012: $7.3 million, 2013: $7 million, 2014: $7.3 million, 2015: Free Agent. What do those numbers look like compared to the other elite WR's? I don't know what elite WR's command, but I guess $10 million'ish?
as a base salary, he seems to be among the top. Not sure how much more he wants. Granted, he is the best in the game so he should probably be the highest paid but there doesnt seem to be such a large discrepancy that you would raise that big of a stink. http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/playersbyposition.aspx?pos=145
Mcclain is absolutely reputable when he is reporting facts. His opinions are off-base at least half of the time, however. I wonder if Dre is trying to take advantage of the uncapped year by getting some of his future base salary shifted to this year and making more of his money now. I really don't see how this could become too big of a problem.
Nice chart find. Yeah, I'm not quite sure what he's complaining that much about. Fitzgerald isn't much above him in base salary and even long-term he's not. Fitzgerald got P A I D in '09 though if I'm reading it right with 13+ million. After that though even he drops down to the 7's. edit: looking at the numbers of Greg Jennings (Packers), Antonio Bryant (Bengals), Larry Fitzgerald (Cardinals). they haven't signed ANYTHING that big. curious. am I missing someone or should those receivers constitute a good sample size of the more elite WR's?
I always wondered when Andre would say something about his contract when u see a few other wideouts making more and Andre is the best in the game. This is one holdout that will produce so Rick pay da man!!!!
A player suspended for 4 games and a WR throwing a wrench in the machine. Are we turning into the Cowgirls? I don't like it overall. Mostly because of what he has left in years. I don't like the feel of this offseason. These guys better perform. That said, pay whatever he wants. He is the best player in the franchise's short history. He is the best receiver in the game. If he keeps up the pace for a couple of years, he could enter the best WR of all time debate. Also with how close we are to being really good, losing him would kill that. I don't like it and it may not be much more than he currently gets, but pay him and ensure that it is still long term. On a similar note, I hate Drew Rosenhaus. I believe thats his agent, but agents in general cause too many headches.
