I agree with Dre' try something different. However how does Bradford continue to make this team puzzles me. I would have rather keep Reggie Swinton. Gaffney needs to step it up too. In hindsight Sloan Thomas or Derrick Armstrong should be in front of him. No production = No play. Although the variable to this is David Carr and the O line. Chronicle Article about the TEXANS Snippet: Andre Johnson ...."Well, everyone has an opinion about it," he said. "I think we should probably spread it out more and make them cover us rather than trying to max protect and having them packed in where they can blitz. "If we spread it out and attack them, I think it would open it up a little more." "I really don't think just because you start running the ball that it's going to open up the passing game," Johnson said. "I think you can start off throwing, and it'll open up the running game. I guess they feel the run opens up the pass."
Might as well give it a shot. With this O-line, only an amazing running game (they do have some skills at run blocking) or a quick-strike passing game can take some of the heat off. Problem is, they're not really rushing with the entire team (like the FS and CB's) that most teams do when they blitz... because they don't have to. They can beat the o-line with just their base defense, and the corners are still back there in double and triple coverage to pick it off.
I agree with the spread it out philosophy. Just don't think they have the recieving threats to do it at this point. It would help if there was a recieving TE worth a damn on the roster. Maybe when Armstrong comes back they'd have enough wr personel to run 4wr sets with DD as a recieving threat(or extra blocker) out of the backfield. Run and shoot pretty much. May not win many games with this squad(not like a more conventional o would...), but it would be more entertaining - if Carr is able to get the ball out quick enough while making good decisions. Not sure if he can do that.
Why not try it....why make Carr a stationary target, and make it easy on the defense? Give it a go....chuck that rock ! DD
I wish we would pass more too. It's a hell of a lot more exciting, when your flying down the field racking up point than running the f'n ball when it's 2nd down and 20 to go.
Capers is not a spread offense kind of coach. He's about staying discipline, executing and running the ball; Since our team can't really do any of that as of now, it kind hard on him. On the other hand, Palmer, suprisingly is a spread em' out, throw down the field type of guy, and the only reason he has been calling the way he has is because his and Caper's style are so different, thus Capers told him to run the offense the way he (Capers) wants. Hasn't really worked out.
This is what I don't understand. Why bring in Palmer, if you're not going to utilize his style of play? Palmer: "Dom, it's 3rd down and 20. I'm going to look for Dre on this one" Dom: "Palmer, you need to run Dominick" Palmer: "But Dom" Dom: "Damn it Palmer, we didn't hire you to be offensive coordinator. You were hired to be the first one to go, when we have a long stretch of sucking ass" Palmer: "OK. David, do you read me?" Carr: "10-4, can we pass it?" Palmer: "David, Don't start that **** with me now. Just send DD into the wall of death" Carr: "Spineless idiot" Palmer: "WHAT?!?!" Carr: "Good plan sir. DD?" DD: "What?" Carr: "Your going into the wall of death" DD: "No problem" Carr: "Hut, hut" Ref whistles Pitts for jumping off sides. Line resumes 25 yards from the 1st down. Carr: "Hut, hut" Carr snaps the ball and hands it off to DD for 2 yards Dom: "Palmer, you idiot. We need the first down" Palmer: "Sorry sir. Perhaps Kris Brown can try a 72 yard field goal???"
LMAO, thats good swilkins. Here's a quote by David: Kinda bad when the QB, star Receiver, and O.Coordinator are on the same page, but the Head Coach is not. Granted, we don't need a Steve Spurrier type of coach (god no), but we do need Dom to at least let up "a little" on his philosophy, or we will get creamed by any team that is halfway decent at stopping the run.
Ah, the times when we wish Jeff Van Gundy was coaching the Texans. Seriously though .. think of that!
Give Jerome Mathis a shot with the deep ball. He reminds me of a speedier Chris Sanders, but he is not 1 dimensional like Sanders.
How can you tell? He has really only played "1" preseason game. Which was mediocre at best. I hope he pans out, but I wont be surprised if he is the Texans equivalent to Bostjan Snackbar...
Andre Johnson is the best player we have, when/if he becomes a free agent, every team will be on his nuts.
