A usual in the world of dvd some of this might change, nonetheless the Simpsons dvd's will get quite a treatment. Here are the rough details for the first set due out 9-25-01. Simpsons! Cross off another from your "most wanted" lists... by Devin Faraci 2001-06-14 We’ve been hearing the rumblings, but now it’s official – the first season of the Simpsons is coming to DVD on September 25th. Here’s the story, according to Reuters: HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - ``The Simpsons'' are coming to DVD. On Sept. 25, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release an elaborate boxed set of the first season of the 10-year-old animated hit that is TV's longest-running current comedy series. A follow-up set of the second season may be released in time for the holidays, with two more sets being released each year thereafter, according to Peter Staddon, Fox Home Entertainment senior vice president of marketing. With only 13 episodes in the first season, the first three-disc set will be fleshed out with loads of extra material, including the original shorts that debuted on ``The Tracey Ullman Show'' and a never-before-seen lost episode. Unlike the first three seasons of ``The X-Files (news - Y! TV)'' that each take up seven discs and are priced at $149 (seasons four and five are in the works), ``The Simpsons Season 1'' will be priced at $39.98. But the price and number of discs will go up for subsequent seasons that each had 26 or more episodes. With sales expectations high, Fox will launch a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign for the series. Creatively, producers are experimenting with innovative features to include in future boxed sets. Staddon said that one idea is to produce retrospective programs featuring highlights of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie or other selected characters from the show. What viewers will not see is the actors recording the voices of the characters. ``That would burst the bubble,'' Staddon said. ``We don't want people to think of anything but Bart and Homer when they see those characters.'' There will also be no interactive gaming features, so as not to take away from the popular video games featuring ``The Simpsons.'' But the first boxed set will include seven foreign-language clips, showing, for instance, Homer and Bart as dubbed in Japanese. Also included will be Albert Brooks outtakes, a BBC special called ``America's First Family'' and an ABC News Special Report on the Bart Simpson T-shirt controversy. Other extras include original scripts, commentary for each episode, early sketches, magazine covers and stills. ------------------ Ceo of the Walt Williams and Lisa Malosky fan club. That's so true. I know I was never really the same after I saw the guy that did the voice of Tony the Tiger of Frosted Flakes fame. Man, oh man... can't wait. I'm getting that first season DVD set as soon as it comes out; especially if it comes out at ~$40! *droool* ------------------ "Now it is more clear that it doesn't make sense." -- HeyPeeism at its convoluted best.
As glad as I am to see The Simpsons come to DVD in full-season form, I will note that FOX has jerked us around on TV show DVDs in the recent past. The first season of Buffy was supposed to be released on DVD in the U.S. in January. As of now, it's still not been released. While I don't expect The Simpsons to be delayed, I also won't get my hopes up until I see the DVDs on the shelves. ------------------ Houston Sports Board Film Dallas.com AntiBud.com
FOX owns the show. The DVDs were through FOX. The fact that the studio sold the show to other networks for broadcast doesn't make the show anything but a FOX-owned show. ------------------ Houston Sports Board Film Dallas.com AntiBud.com [This message has been edited by mrpaige (edited June 14, 2001).]
It seems strange that Fox would sell a show to the WB that was so popular instead of keeping it on their own network in place of some of the shows they have on there now, if it were the case... ------------------
Happens all the time, actually. (Keep in mind, too, that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was not popular when it went on the air in 1997. It was nothing. At best, it had a small following from the movie from several years earlier. And the ratings for Buffy aren't all that great. Last I looked, Buffy got lower ratings overall then any show on FOX). Friends is certainly a higher-rated show than anything on the WB, but that didn't mean that Warners (who produces Friends and er and several other shows) was interested in moving those shows to the WB. FOX has produced such shows as Chicago Hope (which aired on CBS), Dharma and Greg (ABC), The Hughleys (ABC originally), Judging Amy (CBS), Kate Brasher (CBS), NYPD Blue (ABC), The Practice (ABC), Roswell (WB, now UPN), Snoops (ABC), Two Guys and a Girl (ABC), Yes, Dear (CBS), and so on. ------------------ Houston Sports Board Film Dallas.com AntiBud.com [This message has been edited by mrpaige (edited June 14, 2001).] [This message has been edited by mrpaige (edited June 14, 2001).]
This is awesome news. I have been looking forward to this for quite some time. I wondered how long the official Simpsons website was going to have a link on their merchandise page that said "Videos and DVDs". You clicked on the link, and there were no DVDs. I can't wait. ------------------ CC.NET Sim League Web Page My Team (Sonics) Feeling claustrophobic, like the walls are closing in. Blood stains on my hands, and I don't know where I've been. I believe a studio can't make a program and run it on their own channels. Something about the FCC or whatever was afraid of studios become a monopoly. ------------------ "Bada Bing!"
The deal used to be that a network could only own so many of the shows on its network (the percentage changed over time, I believe), but those rules have been relaxed significantly in recent years. The number of shows owned by their networks (or partially owned by their networks) has ballooned in recent years (and looking at the Fall sched, it's just getting more and more common). ------------------ Houston Sports Board Film Dallas.com AntiBud.com

Julie Kavner lives in my town, shelter Island Ny for you stalkers, and no matter how many times that i hear marge in person, IT FREAKS ME OUT!! she has livedhere for several years now, and i think her husband is one of the producers. but the point is that its weird to here marges voice in the grocery store, or on the ferry boat. meeting phill heartman was weird too, but he was SOOO many voices, i thnik more of SNL than a cartoon. ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball www.hanta-force.com
It obviously don't. ------------------ "Now it is more clear that it doesn't make sense." -- HeyPeeism at its convoluted best.
rockhead.. maybe they are just smart.. by making the kids stay the same age etc.. they can have this show running for 20 years or so. I watch it more now than I did when i was younger.. the animation etc just looks better.. and the show is still appealing.. I could see this show lasting another 10 years.. anyone else think it could go another 10 years plus? ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be"
As big a fan as I am, I hope they cancel it now. Ok, I guess that makes me not a very big fan. The older ones were really good. The stuff they make now is crap. Btw, I'm surprised that the shows take up so much DVD space. 13 episodes is -- what? -- 5 hours? And it takes 3 DVDs? I know they fleshed it out with other material, but I thought the DVDs held a mess of information on them. ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
