ok guys so help me out with this.. I keep hearing about the fact that McGrady (who has been my favorite player since Dream retired) is getting swarmed by double & triple teams.. the first couple of times I heard this, I thought that I might have not noticed those double teams because I'm so much into the game and I'm not focusing on minute details like that.. but I decided to go back and watch every single game again (have them on my DVR), and apparently, those double & triple teams don't exist.. yes, that's right, the guy is being defended by 1 guy (Brewer, AK, and sometimes the ghey-elf Korver).. the only help those guys get are from interior defenders (when Tmac drives), but then again, every player gets that help when their man drive to the basket.. now I understand that Tmac is having 3 sets of fresh legs rotating on him, but you're 6'8 with a freakin' 7 footer's wingspan, your cross over is regarded as one of the most effective in the history of the game, you're one of the best one-on-one player the league has ever witnessed, you're athletic as heck, now, why in god's name aren't you driving to the basket? tired? should you really be tired with freakin' no-namers keeping you in check playing you man-to-man with absolutely NO help.? I'm tired of the good old Deke high screen-and-roll.. stop calling for a god awful screen, just play iso and take the guy one on one.. it's freakin' Kyle Korver, not Bruce Bowen.. Now, I might be mistaken, I would really appreciate anyone helping me figure this out.. but this is just really crazy... there are no double teams! none! the don't exist.. he is playing one-on-one, and he keeps waving to Scola or Chuck to come and set a screen, when they do, They bring their man over and Tmac is trapped by the 2 and the roller is covered up, he ends up passing it to BJax or Rafer with the shot clock winding down. .throw it up => brick!! very nice.. I want to see more isolations run for Tmac, especially in the forth when the game is on the line.. but if he is "tired" and he doesn't want it to be "on him", might as well trade him for Baron Davis, atleast he tries..
I saw an analysis the other day with GIFs. I wish I could show you but it's in Chinese and I suck at tranlation.
Tracy needs help...he's a great player but no a great leader... he's not gonna take over a game for you and put you on his shoulders...he ain't gonna drop 13 pts in the 4th quarter and he ain't gonna get you out of the first round unless he has another scoring option...
I think one of Tmacs major flaw is that he is 6'8" and not 6'6". It might sound silly to not want to be taller but Tmac is making that as his excuse. He feels that he can just rise up over everybody cuz hes a little taller than most guards... He has that as his mindset and doesn't drive as much anymore.
Has anyone gone and watched those GIF's posted in that Chinese thread? Its not a bad watch. I can see problems with the defence. They aren't even going through the screens, they are tackling through them and then laying a hand on the man. Every time a pick is called the guy ignores the cutter.........Its totaly disrespect to the other players in the team. I may be wrong without the commentary but it seems to me even a drive and a pullup jumper is met by two people? I can't see any instance where he could get an isolation play without help. He had one on the baseline in one of those Gifs and Kirilenko fouled him immediately.
he only gets doubled when he calls for the pick-n-roll play.. and apparently when he asks for the ball in the elbow, Matt Harpring tries his best to bully Tmac around without the refs calling a foul.. god i hate matt.
thanks for the link. in a LOT of the plays, we have an open guy on the three point line...but he always goes unnoticed. >.< they just need to make that one extra pass. Scola also needs to learn to kick the ball back out when he's surrounded by 3-4 Jazz players instead of trying to go up for the shot himself. He ends up losing the ball half the time when he's trying to maneuver down there with so many people around him.
Watch the secondary pick and roll play with Head and Hayes. They man on Hayes stays back to stop the person calling the pick. The person being screened doesn't aggressively fight the screen. I saw t-mac get a post up in one of those GIFS, Deron comes off his man and intiates a double team (WHICH IS ALSO A FOUL MIND YOU, because his hands are way forward instead of straight up) and just ignores Bobby Jackson. Countless times you'll see T-mac get the ball on the wing, he'll drive on say Korver and Kirilenko will come off his man even before T-mac has taken 4 steps. They are just anticipating him attacking the basket.
great post dude..that's another thing I wanted to talk about.. what in god's name is wrong with Luis? once he gets the ball, he is taking it in, whether he has 1 guy or the whole team on him, he is absolutely sure that he is gonna shoot it.. there isn't such a thing as passing it to an open man.. he has no understanding of his surrounding, he just starts spinning his head out with his r****ded hair, travels all over the place, then throws up a flip shot and falls down to the floor like someone just shot him.. then he smiles, gets up slowly, complains a bit, goes to the other end, and fouls Ronnie Price 30 feet away from the basket with 2 secs left on the shot clock.. talk about being a passion assassin
According to this analysis, in game 1, whenever Tmac went wing isolation, Deron came to double him and forced Tmac to dump the ball to Jackson, who ended up bricking a shot. The PNR between Tmac and Deke didn't work too well in Game 2 either cause nobody could finish when tmac passed the ball to our bigs (also usually brought another defender on Tmac). Utah trapped and swithched a lot on our PNRs. The OP also said that the connection between our PG and Tmac was important cause it would affect our offense efficiency directly. The PG had to make a quick decision whenever Deron went over to double Tmac, otherwise our offense would be stagnant. It is true if you think about game 3 when Rafer was back.
Thats probably true I saw alot of Deron coming over. If rafer didn't shoot alot of blanks in game 4 it would have been slightly different
For us, I don't think PNRs work very well against a team like Utah, especially if T-mac is the one with the ball. They are going to trap him almost all the time, and because none of their guys are extremely short, a lot of times T-mac has trouble passing the ball OVER them to the open guy in the corner and ends up having to pass the ball AROUND one of the players to the guy (usually a guard) that's up top next to him. By this time, Utah has already rotated so the guy with the ball now has a defender in front of him. The Rockets need to learn to move the ball QUICKLY and EFFICIENTLY so that Utah doesn't have time to make that second rotation. They seemed to get the hang of it during their 22 game winning streak but they're not doing it anymore. Instead of doing so many PNRs, which IMO is not a good play with T-mac, I'd like to see the Rockets come up with a way to set more screens for T-mac so that he can catch and shoot.
is it so complicated? jazz defense in a nutshell: option 1: handcheck, grab, hold. if option 1 fails go to option 2: foul, hook, knee. if option 2 fails go to option 3: flop, flail, yell, fall. if option 3 fails go to options 4-10: foul again. if none of these work, go to emergency option 11: foul with two, three, four, or five people.
Im surprised noone on this board has done a detailed analysis like the above in the Chinese forum. I would if i actually had the ability to DVR games.
by the OPs description, it sounds like he's only considering a double to be a man coming over to double TMac before he makes his move. Defenses don't have to do that anymore. The illegal defense rules no longer apply. The defender does not have to come all the way over to double TMac; he can shade over. That's still a double. Only defenders in the lane have to be arm's distance away...and they still get 3 seconds free. TMac is being doubled. He's being doubled the moment he makes a move, or help defense is hawking him enough to wear he thinks the drive will immediately be met by a double, so he calls over the PnR. Plus, he's being illegally hand-checked all the time. that said, I do agree that he should still penetrate...be aggressive. It is his job to force the double team. He is spending too much time reading the defense, and he's teammates should get into the PnR quicker, if that's what they want. Get the motion going...trust it. Damn if Utah doesn't grab people all the time, though.
Not many of you understand that Jazz's policy is to foul anyone driving to the basket. And since everyone knows we stink at free throws their coach will stick it. Additionally, T-Mac isn't young anymore. Look at soccer stars such as Ronaldo from Brazil and Crespo from Argentina. They don't have that zeal and passion anymore. But why we should keep him, is to benefit the ones around him. When hes on the bench the whole offense goes crazy.
Thanks for posting these. I can't read Chinese, but those pictures are pretty damning to anyone who thinks the Jazz are just "single-covering" McGrady.
he shoots, everyone here hates him. he drives, the lane gets clogged up plus no foul calls. he's in a tough situation this year. ANOTHER OFFENSIVE THREAT NEEDED!
