http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4967&Itemid=2 October might be too late... http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=15506 Given the past 2-3 months of sales (both in NA and Japan), I definitely agree that is appears as though a price cut is "critical." I'd like to see how the PS3 performs in March and April, but I'm not really expecting much (even with the arrival of decent games and the success of Blu-ray). It seems like Sony has been aggressive in cutting costs (removing 2,000 components including the EE, transitioning to 65nm, improving Blu-ray manufacturing, etc.), not to mention they've quit bothering with the 20GB SKU apparently (losing less money I guess), so I suppose a price cut to help improve demand could be a possibility in the near future. Unless they want to follow the PSP route, and we know what happened with that... Spoiler It is outselling the PS3, so maybe that's not a bad idea. Thoughts?
Only way I would pay full price for a PS3 is if it cost $399 or if the new Metal Gear Solid was out. I want one but I don't really see the use for one right now, other than a Blu-ray player. But I guess the price cut is good, I'm sure more people will buy it. Plus isn't the price cut going to be around the time that GTA4 comes out? That would be sweet.
Same here, Metal Gear is pretty much the only game I'm looking forward too, and I'm not sure I want to pay $500+ to play that.
Yeah, I think October is around the time GTA4 will be released, so this would be about the same time. And strangely enough, I'm waiting for $400 (guessing 20GB SKU, if Sony bothers shipping it during that time) and/or MGS4 comes out before I look into getting a PS3 too.
Yup. I waited ~2 years for PS2, and I still play the hell out of the thing. I have no problem waiting as long (if not longer) for the PS3.
price cut would suck for those that paid full price, however I only paid 300 for my 60 gig so I shouldn't complain
Those that paid full price have 98% BC, so they shouldn't complain. That, and they got to play Genji and Untold Legends before anyone else.
399 for the 60 gig and 299 for the 20 gig -- then they will start selling. Same for the 360 -- too expensive -- it's a game machine not a computer.
Watch - that will be when Microsoft cuts it's Core sku, drops the Premiuim to Core price, and prices the black 360 at right under the PS3...
My view exactly. I'll buy a PS3 when it's $350, or maybe $399. At this point, the Xbox 360 remains dull enough (from my standpoint) that I won't probably won't bolt that direction and will end up waiting on Sony. I'm hoping to get a Wii this summer for the kid.
Ding -- this is my plan as well -- there are still plenty of games for the PS2 to keep me busy for at least a year. I haven't even played God of War, MGS 3, or Ace Com 5 -- and i'm about 13.44% done with GT4.
Reminds me of this guy: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Enau4SKqeZY"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Enau4SKqeZY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> REALLY old video BTW (if it wasn't obvious), but pretty funny IMO. I think my PS2 recently died, so I'm screwed when it comes to playing PS2 games 2007. I think I'll stick to PC games for the rest of the year, until Sony does drop the PS3's price by $100. I'll have to pray that some of the PS2 games I want to play are backwards compatible...namely GOW2, although I'm pretty sure that is confirmed.
I love that line. Usually when one company starts price cuts the rest follow soon after. I do think 360 would strongly consider it, and was kinda hoping the rumors that they would reduce it around PS3/wii launch time was true. wii I'm not so sure about. I think the initial price point they set allows them to fall back to 200 rather easily, but I dunno if they're ready to do that so soon when they are selling out.
that sucks. Mine is acting a little twitchy too. Got it not too long after launch and it works okay with most games, but not all, but doesn't play most movies. Of course I have beaten the **** out of that system soooo. I'm going to get another one when this one finally craps out. Need another controller(playing with a PSone controller now, ) and dvd player anyway. The more I think about it the more I don't think I'll ever get a PS3.
I'm guessing Microsoft will probably wait until they can get over to 65nm before putting in a price cut; last I heard was that this would be scheduled for the middle of 2007 IIRC, but that might have changed (the black 360 might use them, but I doubt it for some reason). Not that they wouldn't consider one if the PS3 got a price cut before then, but they're not in a big hurry (I'm sure they're itching to get the division into the black). They were able to push retailers to issue some special deals during the holidays (several $199-$299 deals for 360 Premium IIRC), so they're definitely capable of lowering the price to move some units if they so wish. And, of course, if Microsoft does a price cut before Sony, a price cut for the PS3 would definitely be "critical." I have no idea about the Wii either. I said it died, but it is more like it is on life support and I don't feel like paying for the surgery. It basically won't read any games (at least none that I tested). If I felt like it, I could probably try cleaning the lens, or have someone else do it (maybe I could even get Sony to fix it, although I doubt it). I just don't want to bother with that, and this gives me an excuse to spend more time playing PC games. I've been avoiding the Oblivion mod scene for a LONG time now. Luckily, I just finished up playing FFXII, Bully, and a few other games before all this started.
Yea I waited awhile to get a 360, I dont blame people for waiting for systems...man are they getting costly
I'm an Nintendo fan and typically late adopter (didn't buy the PS2 till it was $129) but considering that PS3 has a builtin in Blu-Ray player, it's not a bad bargain at all if they cut the price $100.
