I still can't believe that this happened to me, especially in today's world. It was around 4:30, and I left work to go to my 2nd class of this semester (I went to the other one the night before). It takes like an hour to get to MTSU from where I work, and I always stop in this city before Murfreesboro to get something to eat. Now, it is usually 5:00 when I get something to eat, and I always go to McDonald's. Well, I drive a Maxima, and it has been an awesome car, but like my Camry before it, it always seems to have one recurring problem...the talent of getting flat tires (my Camry always had battery problems for some reason). It was my fault, sorta . The turn to the street that connects McDonald's is a hidden one and is very easy to miss. Well, I turned right onto it & thought I was okay. However, my back right tire clipped the curb and clipped it good. I then heard a damn hissing sound. I knew exactly what was going on...a flat tire. I went ahead through the drive-thru and got my food, but I didn't know what I was going to do. I had to be on campus at this class in an hour and it would take me 45 minutes to get there and that was without worrying about a flat tire. Now, some of you are gonna laugh at me, but I am terrible at changing flat tires. I have done it like twice and both times it took me over an hour. I have been lucky that all the other times that I have been getting these flats, that someone was around with an air pump and a tire store was open to have the tire fixed. But this time my luck ran out. All the tire stores were closed, and I was in a town where I really did not know anybody. Fortunately, I carry a cell phone with me when I drive, and after getting a phone book from one of the managers at the McDonalds, I finally called this one car dealership in town. I told the guy (a service guy) my situation and wondered if he could or knew anyone that could help me. He didn't know but suggested me calling a wrecker service. I did that and a guy came like 10 minutes later. I hated to have to pay someone to change a flat for me, but I had no time to try to do it myself. All this time, I was in the McDonalds, and this lady came up to me. She was in her 40s and she said, "I couldn't help but overhear your situation. If you want to, you can use my car to get to Murfreesboro!" I was like in such shock that I sorta nodded like "yea, whatever", but the later it took the wrecker guy to get there, I realized that I didn't need to drive my car over 60 mph with that spare on there. So, I went up to her and said I would take her up on her offer. She was driving a Cadillac and gave me her keys, name, and cell phone number. I gave her my key to my Max, my name, and my cell phone number. I finally was on my way. I got to class 10 minutes late, but since it was the first class meeting (remember, I didn't even know how to get in touch with my instructor), everything was okay. I even talked to my instructor and explained what happened and he said not to worry about it...that those things happen. I met my Good Samaritan at 9 tonight and we swapped cars. I thanked her again and offered to pay her (I did get gas for her) for what she did, but she insisted it was not necessary. I am going to send her a card, though (she doesn't know that). I said, "I got to thinking about it, and I have never met someone who was so kind and generous like you were with me tonight." She responded, "I just felt like that it was the right thing to do to let you drive my car since you were pressed for time." I am just so blown away by this act by this kind woman. I mean, how many people out there would go up to a complete stranger and let them drive their car, especially when their car is like a Cadillac?? I can't think of too many; thank God, that I did find one who would.
hey manny wink wink nudge nudge heres ur chance. she wants you. go for it. lol juss kidding. thats pretty damn cool. she must be a really great person.
Maybe she had a delivery of Mary Jane in the trunk and it needed to get to campus...and you were simply the mule. Or maybe she was just a nice person.....very nice. DD
Mary Jane? You sure are one hep cat. Let's take a ride in our horseless carriage to the automat and have ourselves a good ol' cup o' joe, daddio. Groovy.
manny...that's awesome. don't hear too many first hand stories about that kind of stuff. the kindness that that lady has shown is a beautiful thing.
Mary Jane?? Is that pot?? It has been a long time since I have heard that, and even then I can't really remember what it meant. That was a good pic there, Smeg. I will have to talk to her because I realize (she probably figured this out) when I got home that I left my parking permit in her Cadillac. If anyone has had a similar story or experience, please share it here.
Manny, great story. Pay It Forward! I use to hitchhike America and was always amazed at the generosity of those who picked me up. Some would go out of their way, some offered a meal, and one truck driver out of Oregon took me in for the night. I met his family, had a great dinner, a comfortable sleep, and a killer country breakfast. Their kindness surpassed anything I ever experienced before. Having been a newly arrival here, their actions gave me a great impression of America. One that I still hold true. Thanks for allowing me to share this. RR
Don't taint this amazing thread with a reference to one of the worst movies of all-time. That's an amazing story, Manny.
WoW Thanks Manny, That story makes me feel good about the world. at least until the next crappy thing happens to me, or I hear another story about little kids being killed
Watch out for that hopweed. Smoke too many reefers and Pat Boone starts to sound like Screamin' Jay Hawkins!
WOW!!! Manny, I am blown away by your story. I am the most pessimistic person on the planet and I expect the worst out of everyone around me... but wow! I'm speechless... the compassion, kindness, and genorsity of this stranger is unbelievable... I never really believed in or thought about guardian angels... but man, it sounds like you've got one! wow!
Come on boys, let us old timers try to influence the younger generation by dropping some groovy old terminolgy. DD
