I've never been a huge poster on ClutchFans, but in the last week or so, I've heard names such as Vince Carter, Amar'e Stoudemire and Baron Davis come up in trade talks and have definitely been a little giddy knowing that one of those guys could be coming to Houston. Was certain to come to Houston...right? Well, that didn't exactly happen as we could never get anything materialized and settled for a much smaller trade (in most people's eyes, anyway) in trading away Rafer Alston for, essentially, Kyle Lowry. Now, I was taking a nap and just woke up with a lot on my mind regarding this trade. The main reason was that I was so confused at first as to what we were doing and why we did it the trade because it was impossible for me to comprehend how a Carter or a Davis wasn't going to be suiting up for the Rockets tomorrow night. Then it became much more clearer realizing that Kyle Lowry is the PERFECT FIT FOR THIS TEAM.
Wow, wasn't done with the thread...computer cut me off. Anyway, the guy is a lightning quick guy that, I think, will come in here and put up huge numbers for this team. I think he is the guy that Morey has had his eye on for a long time and will be night-and-day better than Rafer. He is the guy we need to lead this team and he is a guy that will team up with Aaron Brooks to be an incredibly solid 1-2 punch. With his ability to get to the line and Aaron's shooting ability, I would say that the Rockets just significantly upgraded. Thoughts?
i agree he was a good pickup. everyone that's been on tracy for not attacking the rim for the past few years will love him. he is aggressive as hell, and very strong for his size. his lack of an outside shot is a concern though. best thing about him is that he is very, very competitive.
The Rockets are high on him. I'm not sure if they like his upside more than Aaron's, but the way Morey was talking in the press conference it almost seems like that is the case.
Slashing and getting to the line has long been a need for this team. Lowry should help in that sense. If he can improve his outside shooting, that would make him pretty well rounded.
There's so many threads going right now, and I haven't ready any of them, only the titles. But I saw the poll on the front page. I'm flabbergasted that a significant number of people would be against this move. I don't understand that at all.
I'll judge him after I watch him for a while see how he works with Yao cuz it's hard for PGs to get the ball to Yao in his comfort zone. Hope the deal works out for us
Ya, my feeling is that this trade is not something that was just thought up in one night. It was something that was brewing in the back of Morey's mind and he jumped on it when he got the chance. Like it's already been said, if the guy can continue to get to the line, which there is no reason to think that he cannot, then the Rockets just got themselves a playmaker that will make everyone around him better. Now, I'm not going to say he'll average 20 a night, but he will average, I believe, a few more points than the 7.6 he is averaging right now. If he does that, and can become a better distributor, we did our job at the deadline.
his upside is not like aaron's because he's not as natural of a shooter/scorer. i've always said that aaron could be the next damon stoudamire if he works at it. same type of player, at least from a scoring perspective. i feel like lowry is like a stronger and slower version of tony parker during his first few years with the spurs. limited game from range (which can be frustrating), but can drive and dish, and can finish in traffic. he's also just as relentless as parker if/when he puts his mind to it. if lowry develops a solid game from range, he'll be really solid for a long time to come. definitely has the potential to be a better long term fit than rafer would have been.
He is a great player. People need to stop judging him because he played for the Grizzles. Ask Jim Wright (Villanovas Coach the last 14 years) "Kyle Lowry is the smartest player I have coached"
if brian cook didn't have a player option for next year i would totally agree. as it stands, I think we got a lot of value for rafer's contract. it goes down as a B+ trade in my book.
Durvasa, if Lowry can become a more consistent shooter from long range, I will make the call that his upside is much much higher then that of Brooks. I have always liked him since college and we could easily see him on the all defensive team in the future.
Hopefully he can be a Rondo-like player; fast, strong, athletic, great defenders, attacks the basket, but a poor jump shooter.
My feeling is that this trade has to do with Yao more than anything else. Regardless of the Tmac drama, It seems like the management has finally decided to make some important moves to build around Yao's game rather than make him adjust to something different. It really looks like this is one of those Morey moves that also puts the kind of player that Yao will work best with. Given that the majority of reports on Lowry are that he is a very good defender (some go as far as saying "lockdown") this should significantly help our situation against penetrating guards. Probably the most noticeable knock on the Rockets' defense this season has been our lacking ability to stop points in the paint. I sincerely believe Lowry is just one part of that puzzle. Look at Rondo as a comparison. Although he is young, he is a pretty good defender and a very good penetrater. He really does what he can to distribute the ball. Look for Lowry to be a very similar player. I expect him to penetrate when he gets the open three, rather than pull the trigger. I share your epiphany OP. Originally I was confused, but I trust in Morey and his ability to combine cost conscious moves with the ability to build towards a single goal. I really like this move and I can't wait to see how Lowry plays.
Completely agree. We don't need a big name, because in the end that's just what they are. Lowry could potentially be very promising
