I use it as my primary browser, and at first it works just fine, but then after a while it stops loading pages. It does not quite freeze because I can still move the cursor around and click on my bookmarks or links on the webpage, it just does not load anything. So I proceed to close the browser and it appears to close just fine, only one problem: firefox stays running in the background, meaning that when I try to re-open the browser I get the "firefox is already running" message. So I go to Task Manager and do the standard "end process" procedure, but firefox simply refuses to shut down, it still shows up in the list (not using any CPU resources but it stays put basically). I try ending the process multiple times, still the same problem. The only remedy I have then is to just restart the system if I want to use Firefox again. I did not use to have this problem before, it is quite recent, but I am not sure why it is doing that, maybe there is a bug somewhere with the new updates or an add-on is doing this.

The one positive that came out of this is that I started using IE8 again recently, and I gotta admit it is a wonderful browser, albeit slower than Firefox with functions like switching tabs, but it is quite good neverthelss. I am just used to the Firefox layout and I prefer using it, but I dont like having to deal with this problem over and over again.

Any solutions or ideas why this is happening? If I can end the process and shut down Firefox through Task Manager the problem would be largely resolved, I can manage doing that. The problem is Firefox refuses to shut down, so I cant restart it since it is technically still running in the background

I had the same problem. I just switched to Google Chrome. I recommend switching to Chrome permanently, its actually better than Firefox.

    Have you updated recently?

The release notes on the update from just a few days ago mentions fixes to loading issues (not sure if they're what you describe, though).

    It is updated, yes.

And I really dont want to have three browsers on my system, I like Firefox but if it keeps doing that I will just revert back to IE8, which is a very good browser in its own right.

By the way, I should mention that this has started recently happening on my Vista system, but not on my other machines running XP. Then again, Firefox was working perfectly fine without doing any of this just a few weeks back, so I doubt it is a Vista thing. Most likely their latest updates create some issues that have gone undiagnosed as of yet, but cant be too sure.

I've noticed on this message board, using Firefox, that sometimes images don't appear at first, unless I hit the refresh button. It's only been since the update before last that it started happening. I don't know if it's related to your problem, but I'm hoping the fix in the release notes is a response to it.

Have you installed any add-ons that might be conflicting?

One advantage that Chrome and IE8 (I think) have over Firefox is that each tab runs as a separate process. This means that one tab opens a page that could crash your browser it should only crash that tab. Supposedly it is also more secure, keeping all the code running in that tab's process space but I can't speak too much on that.

I thought this was an interesting read:

Google Chrome - The Comic Book

I should say that I use Firefox but would switch to Chrome if they had the tab customization support. Seriously.

Right click on your Firefox icon and open it in Safe Mode. Choose to open it up with the default settings without any add-ons and see if you have the same problem. If you do not then it is an add on and if you fool around with the options that Safe Mode gives you should be able to isolate plug in is causing the problem.

I've been a big Firefox guy for the last several years, but lately it locks up so much that I've given IE another shot. IE8 is a really great browser and I actually like it more than Firefox now.

Start it in safe mode via Start->Programs->Mozilla->Firefox(safemode). Disable add ons. See which one is causing you trouble to close FireFox. It might be the session module. I had trouble with this and just disabled all of them and started enabling them as I needed them.

I've been using IE8 here lately it seems to be running fairly smooth and fast no doubt.

When that happens hit ctrl+atl+delete, and instead of hitting End Task switch the tab from Applications to Processes and search for Firefox there. You will see in the CPU column, it will have a high number, and thats your problem so hit End Process here rather than under the Application tab, it works for me that way.
Btw, I switched to Google Chrome bc I got tired of this as well.

That is precisely what I do, I switch to the processes tab and I click end process multiple times, and it still won't shut down. Firefox actually does not show up under the Application tab, because it did close, just not all the way I guess since it still appears under the Processes tab.

It just won't shut down, that is the problem I am having. I can and do close down the browser to restart it, the problem is I cant restart without the program completely shutting down in Windows.

I should mention that ever since updating to v3.0 Firefox has been problematic. At first, it was REPEATEDLY crashing and restarting itself again for seemingly no reason at all. Then the next update or two seemed to have taken care of that problem. Then recently it started acting up again.

Oh well IE8 for now I guess.
