Just got back from Six Flags Fiesta Texas - my first time to "ride" anything in a really long time. I'm having to fight fear and motion sickness. (The full story is in the little link in my signature.) Just wondering: -What are your favorite rides or roller coasters? and -Do you think they've gotten a lot rougher in recent years? It seems so. Faster, higher, sharper turns, etc. Is all this safe or healthy? Does anyone else find themselves being a wuss or wishing they'd taken Dramamine?
I haven't been to an amusement park in a very long time. I used love The Excalibur , even when I got a little older but that was because it was my first roller coaster. The Sky Screamer was my first thrill ride. I don't even think I was tall enough to ride it. My brother and his friends were already in line and I ran up there to give them something (don't remember) and they talked me into staying in line with them.
i used to not like roller coasters because i hated the big drop at the beginning, but i eventually over came it. of course now, even though i'll ride them (though i haven't been to a park in a long time), it's the ride up i hate b/c i'm scared of heights. i hate looking over the edge and seeing how high up i am and how in the open i am in the cart. even though it's a wussy ride, xlr8 scares me when i'm on it just b/c i keep worrying the little thing i'm in is going to fly off. an even wussier ride, the swings that just raise up a little and then go around, is even worse. i can't even remotely enjoy it b/c all i can think is some mechanic screwed up and i'm going to fly off. the worst experience ever was riding that ride in vegas at the top of the stratosphere which hangs over the edge. 2 minutes of sheer terror. if you think i'm worried about the swings flying off, this was about 10 times worse. i'm not even sure how i got myself on there. i forget which park it's at (maybe kennywood, i'm not sure), but there's some new coaster which initially goes up 420 feet. i would never ever get on that thing. me being 420 feet in the air in an open cart is not going to happen.
I've only been to Astroworld and Disneyland. I used to like the Texas Cyclone the best, but I have to say that the Taz Tornado has become the best coaster at Astroworld. I would love to go to Busch Gardens or Cedar Point some day.
If I'm not mistaken (pretty sure I'm not) the Taz Tornado is no longer there...I think they took it down a few years back because it had so many problems and was dangerous. Personally I think Astroworld has pretty good rides and a lot of them compared to other parks...at Fiesta Texas the Superman was the only one I liked much at all. Some of my favorites at Astroworld are Grease Lightning, Dungeon Drop, and Serial Thriller...I will never ride the Batman ride again (damn near gave me a concussion last time), and don't care for the Cyclone either (hurts my neck).
Now that's a shame. The Cyclone finally ges knocked off the top of my list, and the coaster that was better gets removed. That's crappy. I just checked their website, and you're right. It's not there any more. Another reason not to go to Astroworld.
excalibur was the schit. i'll always remember wanting to be cool by touching the grass (like everybody else) at the tail end of the ride when it did that spinning horizontal loop really really close to the ground. looking back, i guess my cousins and i could have broken our arms doing that.
i haven't been on a rollercoaster since the last time i went to astroworld about 6 years ago. for some reason i don't have any problem at all with roller coasters but i refuse to get on anything that spins. i don't like being dizzy, i wouldn't even get on teacups at disneyland or those spinning swings.
Kingda Ka just opened at Six Flags Great Adventure (in Jersey), and I gotta say, I have zero desire to subject myself to this: Hey, I love a good coaster, but I'm not looking to piss myself on the ride, thank you very much.
VesceySux - I don't think I want to mess with that one. I'm just not sure how much the human body is designed to take. I used to like the Viper at AstroWorld - this was a while back - and then, at the old Opryland, the Wabash Cannonball and especially the Screamin' Delta Demon. Not that any of you (except maybe Manny Ramirez) probably even remember Opryland or know where it was...
I love thrill riders. I'm going to Fiesta Texas in October. But we are planning on going to Cedar Point (The #1 rated amusement park in the world) in Ohio next summer. I can't stand Disney crap... They have the Top Thrill Dragster plus other insane coasters.
I used to work at Astroworld when I was in high school, and I actually worked at the Excalibur, so I can definitely relate with everyone liking that one (and touching the grass on the final curve/losing things at the same spot). My favorite part about working there was that every morning, in order to start the ride, 3 people had to actually climb up on the track and turn a key to get it going. I used to love climing up to the top of the lift early in the morning, sitting up there and watching the 610 traffic go by with the Astrodome across the street and downtown in the background. Very cool stuff. But the truth is, I haven't been to an amusement park of any kind for years. Next month, though, our company is going to the one in Salt Lake City, but it's supposed to suck so I'm not getting my hopes up.
Nashville, baby. I went there when I was like 7 and we stayed at the Opryland Hotel. I remember watching the Mandrell Sisters put on a live radio show from the lobby area. We went to Andrew Jackson's place and we drove by all the big country artists' houses (Ronnie Milsap's was my favorite).
I am envious. Cedar Point is roller-coaster heaven. I've never cared for the "quick thrill" rides. Ya know the ones.. you go up, you come back, ride over. I like a coaster that lasts a whiled and whips you up, around back, down. sideways, upside down, around again, up again, down again, etc.
The first thing that struck me about that pic was "WTF! That coaster is given me the finger!" As for amusement parks working a summer at Astroworld has turned me off from amusement parks and foot long hot dogs.
Taz's Tornado was a coaster that originally came from Germany I believe as part of the like rollercoaster exchange program or something. It started having problems cause it just wasn't suited for Houston weather and so it was shipped off someplace else. I think I like Cyclone the best, though I've never been on Serial Thriller. Astroworld isn't the same anymore for me maybe cause all the rides seem tame to me now. Time to visit some other parks I guess.
