when i went to toronto recently, i was surprised at how ignorant canadians think we are...in all honesty, i agree with the canadians that we americans know jack sh*t about canada...BUT other than for the sake of "expanding our educational horizons", we really don't need to know anything about canada...what importance does it have to us...i mean we basically own the place...no offense or anything (and i know most canadians won't admit to this and will just cuss me out for saying it), but we got canada on a LEASH *whip whip*

Why open this can of worms and waste 3 hours of MacBeth's life as he retorts?

    What is there to cover?

They spend 1% of their measly GDP on defense, while we spend over 3% of our gigantic GDP on defense.

They take their savings to create a welfare state while they enjoy a completely secure life financed by U.S. taxpayers.

Sure, life is good in Canada, thanks to the United States. 90% of those maple leaf wearing, ice fishing, toothless beer swilling Canucks live within 100 miles of the U.S. border for a reason!!

This could be one of the longest D&D threads ever.

Jeeze, why so much hate for Canada? What did they ever do? It's almost like you are pissed that they are happy with the way they do things. What do you mean they enjoy a completely secure life financed by our tax dollars? I hadn't realized that Canada was a target of other countries and that we have been keeping them safe all this time. Shoot, I always thought it was because Canadiens don't do anything that pisses people off, except for JH of course.

As for the population living so close to our border, there are tons of reasons for that. I mean, the climate is a very valid one, why would they start cities in the middle of tundra? Hey, we've got nice chunks of our population living close to the Mexican border and the Canadien border. That doesn't really say anything, does it? Also, those Canadien cities are all quite old, older than the USA. Vancouver is the only major city that wasn't a fort or something for colonists at some point. It sprang up because of the railroad.

It's a valid topic SLAND, kind of funny how it only took one person to prove that people are ignorant and or hostile towards Canada. Also, I think what you were asking is about stuff like their culture and history, not for someone to recite lines from Candadian Bacon.

I find statements like these to be extremely puzzling. I mean, ignorance is forgiveable and can at least be attributed to factors like a poor primary/elementary education system, limited access to worldwide medias, etc... But, I have never understood where the arrogance comes from. What causes such disdain for the rest of the world?

Because we own it, that's why! The rest of the world is in our debt for everything from defeating Hitler to forcing the Commies to implode. Canada has enjoyed the protection of us under NORAD forever, while getting a free ride to put their money into building a socialist nanny state. When you are the best, you can both talk the talk and walk the walk.

As MacBeth and others have pointed out, it wasn't a U.S. solo effort to beat Hitler. There are historians who believe that the Soviets would have eventually taken Berlin on their own, though in a much longer time frame and with even more casualties. Even with our help the Soviets deserve at least half the credit for taking out Hitler.

Exactly, that's why the rest of the world absolutely adores Americans.

Good technique, the "it was just a sarcastic joke" move is a classic.

They were originally allied with the bum! There is no way in hell that they would've taken out Hitler without him invading and breaking his forces on the rock that was the Russian winter. The Russians did take Berlin in the end. And besides, wouldn't that have been great, a totally Communist Europe!

Short Answer: Many of the attitudes expressed in this thread is exactly the kind of myiopic self centred attitude that most around the world accuse us of, to which we usually respond " They're just jealous."

I wrote a piece in here before criticizing the US for being incredibly ignorant of the world outside it's borders, and the dangers of coupling that ignorance with being the most militarily active nation in the world, in the face of the contrary opinions of others who know more about the parts of the wordl we are active in...and ironically many of those who argued with my first point now defend it. Funny stuff.

How much is the income tax in Canada? It semeed when we were there, we were spending around 15% total on taxes for purchases of goods and services.

Uh...bama...I opened up the thread, and I'd been away for a week, so it was new to me.

And do you see just the slightest bit of hypocrisy in calling Grizzly ( from Canada) ridiculous for, as you say, insulting your home state when he did it, clearly to be ironic, in response to your insulting his home country!?!?!?

    P.S...

Grizz...have missed ya bud. Where you been? I know you don't need me defending you, but this just seemed too silly to let go.

Oh, and I would be interested in your response to my Sky Is Falling thread...the practical argument to complement the moral one.

    America owns Canada
    Australia owns New Zealand
    America owns Australia
The Commonwealth owns Australia, Canada, and New Zealand
    America owns England

So therefore, America owns the western world.

I’m thinking a comment about hypocrisy would be pointless here. Clearly this is, um … not a very educated individual, and that would just be piling on.

BS, you shouldn't talk trash if you don't know what you're talking about. It kind of has a reverse effect.
