American pastor Terry Jones vows to hold national Koran burning event

THE pastor of a small Florida church has promised to hold a Koran burning in defiance of a top US commander who warned his actions will spark violent reactions in the Islamic world.

Terry Jones said he had given "serious" consideration to the concerns expressed by US commander General David Petraeus over plans to torch the Koran, but remained adamant the event would proceed anyway.

Pastor More.. Jones, who heads the Dove World Outreach Centre in the town of Gainesville, said the burning would take place to mark the September 11 terror attacks and would send a message to Muslim extremists.

"We are taking the general's words very serious," he said before noting he had "firmly made up his mind" to go ahead with burning the Muslim holy book.

"I mean, how long, when does America stand for truth?" he asked..

"Instead of us being blamed for what other people will do or might do, why don't we send a warning to them?

"Why don't we send a warning to radical Islam and say, don't do it. If you attack us, if you attack us, we will attack you," he said.

In a statement, Gen Petraeus, who is the US commander of the Afghan war, expressed concern that the planned torching of the Koran would be a propaganda coup for Islamic extremists.

But the pastor insisted that the Koran torching to be held on Saturday aimed "to remember those who were brutally murdered on September 11th" and to send a warning "to the radical element of Islam".

"We wanted to send a very clear message to them that we are not interested in their Sharia law," he said.

"And we do not tolerate their threats, their fear, their radicalness. We live in the United States of America."

The pastor's words sparked violent protest in the Afghan capital of Kabul where hundreds turned out to burn an effigy of the outspoken Christian during a demonstration.

Protesters railed against the US and called for President Barack Obama's death before denouncing the American church's plans to burn the Islamic holy book.

The White House and General David Petraeus himself came out and pleaded to this guy not to go ahead with the burning event, so as not to place American troops in more danger overseas.

I am just continually amazed at how people who claim to be patriotic Americans are the ones who are most likely to just pay lip service to patriotism and love of country and do the exact opposite. The intention of this man is spreading hate and gaining attention, nothing more. He has only 50 people total in his congregation for goodness sake!

Honestly, this should be a non-story, but again the power of the media to blow things out or proportion is on clear display here. This guy is not worthy of this much attention. He is not only fringe, he is on the fringes of fringe. This has nothing to do with Christianity and a number of Churches and Synagogues by the way are planning interfaith rallies and vocal opposition to this.

I hope cooler heads will prevail in the end. Certainly this will only complicate things and increase violence against American troops overseas, who are already in harms way.

If this guy really wanted to make the point that we don't tolerate the threats of radical Islamists, why doesn't he join the military and go fight them?

What a piece of human filth this guy is - and far more anti-christ than Christian. The world would truly be a better place if he walked out his front door and immediately got run down by a bus.

And yes, if we had a media that was more focused on relevant news than on appealing to viewers' basest and dumbest desires (all for the sake of making as much money on advertising as possible) it's probably unlikely that any of us would have even heard about this ****ty stunt.

Maybe I should start a few threads: how can this guy's book burning event possibly be reconciled with the idea of Christianity being a peaceful religion? I will solicit real responses to better help me understand the violence that seems to spring from Christianity, from the Crusades onward. I mean, are there moderate Christians? ;)

This is the perfect opportunity for Muslims to prove their critics wrong by ignoring this guy.

Or it's the perfect time for us Christians to show what we think when the members of our faith poop in our house.

I would suggest every Christian church that wants to promote tolerance and dialogue could feature a reading from the Qur'an. That would be kind of cool. Learning opportunity!

I think it would be pretty sweet if some undercover Muslims went to the event and burned Bibles, too.

Actually, that wouldn't be "sweet", but it'd be ironic. I wonder what this "pastor" would do? Threaten violence?

Didn't Gainesville have some other book burning event two years ago? Maybe it's an annual award.

Of course there are moderate Christians. But I'm not sure if there is such a thing as moderate Christianity. Don't Christians have to ignore important parts of their faith to fit in with the modern, moderate world?

Irony: the Sharia Law is not in the Quran, its entirely man made...neither is stoning, or many of the other things the extremist along with the West that gives them credibility and dignify their definitions say Islam is about.

THe quran itself is for the most part not legislative in nature as well. As political and social agendas come about, in order to unify, using religion as a tool almost to unify as been done with other religions, ehre oyu see the mix of these radical views, yet only it is being accepted inheritenly as the religion itself as the cause and not as the people. As if the moderate muslims which are the majority of muslims around the world, not just in the USA, don't read the same quran that the extremist do, simply the extremist infuse their own values, etc into it.

Just like Hitler who considered himself a strong christian infused his views, and the KKK consider themselves good christians as those who are for killing gays, or whatever discrimination in the past. The religion itself is not the problem, its extreme people manipulating and using the religions for their cause. Its sad some people who otherwise oyu would think have a high amount of intelligence can't puzzle it together

Hitler expressed admiration for the Muslim military tradition and directed Himmler to initiate Muslim SS Divisions as a matter of policy.[321] According to one confidant, Hitler stated in private, "The Mohammedan religion too would have been much more compatible to us than Christianity. Why did it have to be Christianity with its meekness and flabbiness?"

more quotes about religion from your countryman. I wonder what was his inspiration for the Holocaust is..

The folkish-minded man, in particular, has the sacred duty, each in his own denomination, of making people stop just talking superficially of God's will, and actually fulfill God's will, and not let God's word be desecrated. For God's will gave men their form, their essence and their abilities. Anyone who destroys His work is declaring war on the Lord's creation, the divine will.[16]

Author Konrad Heiden has quoted Hitler as stating, "We do not want any other god than Germany itself. It is essential to have fanatical faith and hope and love in and for Germany.

    Adolf Hitler:
"Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord."

Hitler was obviously a horrible person. I was merely responding to the repeated claims that he was a devout Christian, which I consider to be false.
