OK, smart-asses. Y'all know who you are. Next season, they are auditioning bands. And genre. Any type. This will allow folks to possibly get name recognition for simply auditioning. It's up to the people who were snooty about AI in the first place to suck crow and do it. BTW, this is my fav, so far: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IPlEnC4SdCA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IPlEnC4SdCA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
I never understood why people were so uppity about AI....it is all about getting noticed....and if AI does that...good for the talent. I have been waiting for a Battle of the Bands show......knew it had to come....glad it is here. Now let's see if people are still AI snobs..... DD
Ugh, battle of the bands. They suck locally and they'll suck on a national level. I know a band that did Star Search and won. You know what they are doing today? They are playing cover gigs because that show didn't get them anywhere AND they ultimately couldn't live up to the hype. American Idol is NO guarantee of long-term success in the music business. You can achieve pop culture stardom, but that lasts about 10 minutes in the modern world of disposable music. Clive Davis just REJECTED Kelly Clarkson's new CD and told her to go back and make a new one because this one sucked. Six months of recording and she's back to square one. The problem is that the music business is changing. The major labels are dying as is commercial radio. The paradigm that is imploding is the one that says you get discovered, sign with a big label, sell millions of records and tour the world playing in front of 15,000 people per night. That music business is nearly gone. Here's the real problem with AI: it's based on the need to fit into the mainstream. It requires that you strip away anyone who is ugly, different, quirky and/or interesting. Anyone think Elvis Costello or John Lennon or Bob Dylan wins on AI? Anyone think Led Zeppelin or REM or Nirvana wins on the AI battle of the bands? Probably not, but I bet you Creed or Nickelback or Fall Out Boy would've cleaned up. Hey, if they pick someone unique, talented and interesting, I'll be more than happy to admit it. But, so far the only person from AI that looks like he COULD have long-lasting success in the pop music business is a guy that was rejected by voters and that's only assuming he can follow up his first pretty boring CD with something that listeners will buy like they did this one.
Blaphemy! I love Nickelback! Seriously, why wouldn't you try this out? I'm fully aware that it is more about producers than actual talent, but hell! I still pull the sticker off my Burger King cup to see which "spidey suit" fits me. It is all relative. And the day they allow people my age on there, I will stand in line, willingly... <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2-tQr5yCo4s"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2-tQr5yCo4s" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> BTW: Stagemanship + guitar talent = Angus. Learn it. Live it. Love it.
The problem with AI regular or AI battle of the bands is that the show is not even based on real talent. Personalities of the artists take center stage over the actual talent, and thus most of the time real talent is not found. Most of the singers on the show these days qualify for a church choir at best. When you have people like Simon talking about having the "complete package" you know something is wrong. For entertainment, yeah, AI is ok, but for music it is crap. Real artists compose and write their own music, and play their own instruments. AI contestants just memorize a lyric sheet, and often times forget the one page of lyrics given to them. Pathetic.
Are you kidding me? Nickelback and Fall Out Boy is the Shizznayt! I can't believe people still watch AI. It got kind of boring fast.. even the early stages when people are still trying out seem lame now. It was funny the first 2 seasons.. It's basically the same type of voice, songs, and routines over and over again, season after season. Battle of the bands should be interesting. It'll be like watching Good Charlotte and Simple Plan duking it out... [puke]
Being a star has as much to do with Charisma as it does with talent. And AI does not just promote the beatiful people. Rueban Studdard, Fantasia....neither of them is particularly pretty....Clay Aiken (Girly man number 999)...... AI is a great show and it launches careers... So far.....Kelly Clarkson has done very well, Carrie Underwood has done great, Chris Daughtery, Clay Aiken, Kelly Pickler....and a few others. This Battle of the bands will probably discover a very talented band, and launch their career....heck maybe a few bands.....and why is that bad again? The thing is that this is a popularity contest....and the winners are more appealing to the mass market.....THAT is why they are successful.... So, if you are a talented musician and writing your own music, but it is a niche type of music, you aren't going to win. It is all about what Joe Q Public wants on that day........THAT is how stars are made....right type of music at the right time. Everyone should be happy for the winners, as they will be living their dream. DD
I do not need to post in this thread. Jeff has said it all, and then some. Bravo, Jeff. Keep preachin', bro!
Well, I'll probably watch just to see people playing actual instruments for a change. Who cares if it's good or bad. Didn't Paul Shaffer have a VERY short lived show like this on VH1 a few years ago? Of course, it was a TRAINWRECK. Also, VH1 had a show called Bands on the Run. All the bands blew chimps, but it was at least entertaining to watch the bands try and promote their shows in a new city every week. I wish they would do another season.
Is that the one Flickerstick was on? I like Flickerstick. How can you not like a band with a song called "Chloroform the One You Love"?
Tons of times it takes the right combination for a concept to work..... American Idol is not much different than Star Search but it is enough different to catch the publics fancy. I am sure those of us on here that are in a band are happy playing whatever type of music they like and are not really in it to become famous or get a recording deal. I just don't understand why the downplaying of a show that will help fellow musicians. No one is stopping people from creating their own music or being in their own style of band...... DD
I'm with DD on this one. Pretty much everything about AI sucks, but it isn't the force behind the change in the industry, but a result of it. It is a medium for certain types of singers, and now, groups. Don't like, don't watch, don't care....but I'm not complaining, either
If people want to try to better themselves and get famous, heck...go for it. If others want to stick to the "I did it my way" credo....good for them. Some people are happy just playing music, others are in it for the money..... Either way, it is ok by me. DD
There's something inherently offensive about bands being deemed better or worse based on a phone in poll after a quick 10 min segment. I much prefer the old school system where the record execs would decide how to package the music and then pay off the DJ's to play the ones from which they thought they could make the most money. Music industry's never been pure.
I agree. I don't like the show at all because I get tired of watching a bunch of teenagers try to imitate Christina Aguliria...Agularia...uh, the other chick that kissed Madonna, but I certainly don't blame it for the downfall of the music industry. Really crappy music existed waaaaay before American Idol and it will exist long afterwards. It's not AI's fault.
