So I'm about to buy a pretty sizable purchase on Amazon.com and I noticed that if you sign up for their credit card you get 20 dollars off your first order. I'm young, only have 1 cc, and have perfect credit. The Amazon.com card is a Visa and my current card is a Visa. Would it make sense to sign up for the card, get 20 dollars off my purchase, and then just cut up the card when it arrives? I really have no use for the card, but 20 dollars off does sound nice. I guess I'm slightly naive about credit cards because I pay off my entire balance every month (the smart thing to do, I suppose).
The only drawback is that applying for credit cards generally add a bit of a "hit" to your credit score, but it should be no big deal. Now for my Amazon.com credit card rant. I have one of these cards and have used it and always paid my bill on time or early. I attempted to purchase a laptop for my daughter and my amazon card was declined with no reason given. After using another card, I contacted them and they told me it was because it was used at a gas station and restaurant and it didn't fit my "spending pattern", regardless of the fact I have used it for major purchases before. My main complaint was that there was no reason given for the declination and the customer service rep implied that I should know the way they do business.
if you are going to cut it up don't forget to close the account. They could mail you another when it expires and someone could steal that one. Happened to me.
Or you can ask them to change your address. Closing accounts also could potentially have a negative effect on your credit, but.... I get where you're coming from.
