The fresh start Amare Stoudemire hopes to make next season doesn't stop at the knees.

Stoudemire, never shy about proclaiming his potential for greatness, will be wearing a new jersey in 2006-07 -- No. 1 -- after a '05-06 season in which he was limited to three games because of two knee surgeries.

ESPN.com has learned that Stoudemire formally applied to the league before the March 3 deadline to change his jersey number from 32 to 1 starting next season. For a player to change numbers without being traded, he must have worn the same number for at least four seasons and complete the application process.

Suns rookie Dijon Thompson wore No. 1 this season. Stoudemire has worn No. 32 since the Suns selected him ninth overall in the 2002 draft and sported No. 12 as a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team.

Stoudemire this week confirmed the number change to ESPN.com but said he prefers to address the switch after the season.

The only other player in the league to apply for a number change for next season is the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant, who's moving from No. 8 to No. 24.

League rules dictate that Stoudemire and Bryant will have to keep their new numbers for a minimum of three seasons.

I heard about this on SR610 the other day. Seems a bit arrogant to me. The Suns are having a great season without him, so he plans on coming back with the number 1?

Phoenix almost certainly would start Amare at center next season.

I think the Suns will be very popular with NBA fans next year (particularly after these playoffs), and they should win a ton of games. At the same time, I get the feeling that Yao's popularity is diminishing, ironically while his individual game is improving dramatically.

Yao might not be a starting center for the West in 2007.

Why do you think Yao's popularity is diminishing? The only reason I can think of is the Rockets' pathetic season. That's why his monster stretch of games didn't generate more attention outside of Houston. If the Rockets have a good season next year AND Yao plays 27/10 dominant, his popularity will blow off the charts and he WILL start in the All-Star game.

Yao is a huge part of the NBA's marketing future. Tracy is too if he stays healthy. Same for Amare but he won't be as big a deal as Yao if Yao steps into superstar status. Not even close.

Didn't Yao just set an all time record in terms of all star votes?

Yao will be the starting C in the All Star Game until at least 2010-2011.

Amare should worry more about whether he can jump again than his jersey number.

Which is all the more reason to root for the Suns, they've basically put themselves in the same exact position as last season WITHOUT that arrogant, childish, cocky b*stard.

Now when he's back next season and the Suns don't do as well, he will be blamed for it, and people will say that "Nash and Marion did it without him, he's not the most valuable player on this team".

Beat me down if you want, but I've said all along (i.e, last year) that Nash is the engine who makes the Suns go. If Amare comes back strong but Nash declines next year, the Suns may not be any better. When they won 29 games in 03/04, Marion, Amare (2nd year), Joe Johnson & Barbosa (rookie) were there. They quit on Frank Johnson and D'Antoni took over and coached the final 60 games.

The big difference between 03/04 (29-53) and 04/05 (62-20)? Steve Nash took over from Starbury as team leader and PG. Plus D'Antoni had the team for the entire season.
