This will be my wife's first Thanksgiving since her Dad passed away. We usually made it by their house in the afternoon and he cooked, we ate and watched the cowboys.

This year she wants to do something different. Our plans have to be able to include our 2 kids (5 year old girl and 3 year old boy)

I thought about disney world which would be $2500 for the weekend.

    Or

A resort in Mexico, also expensive and mostly booked.

    Or

    Camping.

    How about some more ideas.

Any suggestion for Houston restaurants that do Thanksgiving would also be appreciated.

Volunteer the whole family for a couple of hours at a soup kitchen?

It would be starting a new family tradition, one the kids could grow up with. And it's cheaper. ;)

Instead of eating and watching the Cowboys, eat and watch the Lions...

We started that when we had kids. We had our Thanksgiving around noon at our house then went to the inlaws in the afternoon/evening and had second Thanksgiving there.

I'd be happy with just staying at our house and doing it all there but the wife thinks it will be easier being away from home and out of town.

Vegas baby...I'm actually going that week...I don't have my kids this particular holiday and we wanted to get my parents a cool x-mas gift, so my brother and I pitched in and we're taking them to Vegas for the holidays as they've never been...Plus, we're going too...Not sure if it'll be a every year tradition, but maybe every other year...

I would suggest you start the tradition at your house, but maybe this year, you buy the stuff instead of cooking/preparing it...

    Good luck...

You can do what I'm doing. I'm taking my wife, her 70-ish mother, one of her mother's 70-ish friends, my 81 year old mom (in a wheel chair), and my middle sister (who is 55) to............drum roll please........Paris for 9 days.

Me and five ladies. Just imagine the talk going around my family right now. "Are you SURE you should be going? Aren't you afraid?"

Or....you could rent a beach house on South Padre Island. The kids would love combing the beach, and it probably wouldn't break the bank.

    That's what I was thinking.

Thanksgiving is a day for giving thanks, eating turkey and watching football and/or sleeping.

My brother in law decided that this year he wanted to do somethign a little non traditional (we usually eat at a family members house and watch football). This year we are all going to the Four Seasons for lunch and then we are staying in a hotel near the galleria so we can shop on Friday.

Doneraki Mexican food. That's what me and my family had last year. Fajitas for Thanksgiving. I was very, very thankful!

you should try having maybe a bigger celebration at your house.
Thanksgiving is about Thanks, Food, Family, not Mickey Mouse.
    Exactly.
If she starts to freak out and get emotional just remind her this is for the kids.
