HOUSTON – Today, the NBA announced that Rockets center Alperen Sengun was named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played from Monday, Jan. 1 through Sunday, Jan. 7 (Week 11). He is the first Rocket to have won the award since James Harden in November of 2019 and is the youngest to have done so in franchise history at 21 years old.

The Rockets went 3-1 last week, with Sengun averaging a team-high 24.0 points along with 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.50 steals. He had 26 points and 9 assists in a win vs. Detroit on Jan. 1, 30 points and 8 rebounds in a win vs. Brooklyn on Jan. 3 and closed out the week by recording his 11th double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 boards in a win vs. Milwaukee on Jan. 6. Sengun had 19 points vs. Minnesota on Jan. 5, snapping a career-best seven-game streak of scoring 20 or more. He did not have a streak longer than two games over his first two seasons.

This season, Sengun is averaging 21.4 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 5.1 apg and 1.09 spg while shooting 53.7% from the floor. He joins Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokić as the only players averaging at least 21.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 5.0 apg this season. Entering 2023-24, only four different players averaged at least 21.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 5.0 while shooting 53.0% or better in a single season (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar twice, Antetokounmpo five times, Wilt Chamberlain three times and Jokić three times).

Dating back to 1975-76, Sengun is the ninth different player (21st time over that span) to have recorded his totals of points (729), rebounds (305) and assists (172) through a team’s first 34 games of a season. He is also the first player since Chris Webber in the mid-1990’s to have reached his totals of points (2,530), rebounds (1,376), assists (648), steals (166) and blocks (163) through the first 181 games played of a career.

Sengun has scored 30+ points in three of the past eight games after doing so three times the first 173 games of his career. He has scored 20+ points 21 times this season after doing so a total of 17 times in his first two seasons. Sengun has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.05 this season, up from 1.51 in 2022-23 and according to NBA.com, he has a defensive field goal percentage of .471 this season, down from .504 in 2023-24. Over the past 14 games Sengun is shooting 83.0% from the foul line, up from 63.7% the first 20 games of the season. He has hit 21 3-pointers in the 34 games this season after having 19 in 75 games played in 2022-23

There are some who don’t even think he is the best player on the team, let alone the best player in the conference the last week. We salute these brave souls holding the line, with the hashtag “nope”. Defiant and brave, stay on that side.

Houston already has the Dream but I get a feeling Alperen Sengun is going to be the (reoccurring) Nightmare for… certain people.

it feels icky seeing people on the TL who hated Sengun last couple years praising him now. Y'all hated Bari last year and y'all hate Jalen this year (some of yall starting to hate Amen too). A little patience please. We got a bunch of dawgs on the team

Dude got the cause and effect reversed:

Alpi shoots more when the offense is struggling and passes more when things are going well.

Games where the offense is struggling are, of course, more likely to be losses.

When Alpi stops passing up open shots instead of sometimes making things more difficult than they should be, he'll go to another level and take the offense with him. More of these awards will come.

That said, his lack of selfishness is a good foundation to build from. It took JVG two years to change Yao's mindset, but it won't take Udoka that long with Alpi.

Feels good to have a player not named James Harden win it again
