I pull up in the left turning lane behind this car. The main light turns green but the turning light doesn't turn green or red, it just stays black. This particular turning light goes from green to red to black (and no, there are no "wait for turn signal" signs). There are no cars coming towards us, and no red turning light, so I honk once after waiting 5 seconds for the car in front of me to turn. She doesn't move at all. I honk again and this time I see her sticking her head out the window and cursing at me. I finally go around her by cutting into the oncoming traffic lane and turning while she's still cursing at me. I don't know the turning laws in your neck of the woods, but if there is no oncoming traffic and the red turning signal is not on, shouldn't you be allowed to make that left turn and not have to wait for a turning signal? and yes, I am asian. You may commence with the driving jokes, but please at least give your opinion about whether I was in the right or wrong.
It's legal in Texas, but other states may vary. By "oncoming traffic lane", you went into the left lane, then made a left turn or.... right lane, then left turn? She's the one with the road rage if she can't handle some honks.
Then what is the point of having a red signal? I always thought that black meant neutral, i.e. go with whatever the main light is displaying.
What intersection is this, if I may ask? Is there a "Left Turn Yield" or "Left turn protected on green" sign next to or above the electronic signal that has the left turn that you say "goes to black"?
Hmm. I have never heard of the green means go, not means no. That said, I'm a youngin. Usually, it's fair game unless there's a sign that says 'left only on left arrow'. Anything else (that's not a red arrow/light) means yield.
if there,s a left turn light, I think you have to wait for it regardless of what color it is when it,s not on. But I don't know how you,d know it's there if it,s not on- there shoudl be a sign as you approach the intersection with the specific do's & donts of that left turn lane, i.e. No uturns, left on signal only, etc.
Maybe the bulb was put for that light would be another angle. Almost all turning lanes have there own light displaying solid solid green where you can turn but do at your own risk and then then arrow green, you have a Protect path on the turn. I think maybe the bulb was out, cuz otherwise it would show red or something.

I'm with you HB. You know she eventually turned, too. I can't stand drivers like this. You need to be able to make quick decisions and commit when driving a 2,000+ pound death machine.
should have explained you were honking not for her to turn but you wanted to know what she was doing out of the kitchen.
One long honk= MOOOOVE! Two honks, one short and one long= **** YOUUUU!!!! Three short honks= WTF?????
I think Hotballa is actually in the right here. If there is a protected arrow that comes on it obviously means you get a protected turn. However, if the light sequence is "green, no light, red" then when there is no protected turn I'm pretty sure you are still allowed to turn but you have to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic. You are only prohibited from turning by a red light or a sign instructing you otherwise.
Are you sure the light doesn't go from green to yellow to nothing? Never heard of a green to red to nothing. Usually if there is a red arrow, it never goes to black. You are correct though, a green light with no arrow lit means to yield when turning. Either the light was broken or the person was stupid.
Unless it was this kind. Though I'm thinking on the AF base where I live they have some weird turning lights, been a long time since I've been on base though.
