The 34-year-old free-agent guard, the NBA's MVP in 2001 but coming off a disappointing season, also has been pursued by Miami and Memphis this summer.

Reporting from Las Vegas -- Talks between the Clippers and free-agent guard Allen Iverson have been characterized as "very serious," according a source close to Iverson who was not authorized to speak publicly about the negotiations.

The Clippers have long been intrigued by Iverson, having come close to acquiring him in the past.

As recently as last week, however, their interest in him was considered more of a long shot.

The Clippers were also waiting to see what would happen with their trade that sent Zach Randolph to Memphis, but that deal is scheduled to be completed Friday.

Iverson is looking at the $5.8-million mid-level exception for next season, and one of his other potential suitors, the Miami Heat, is reportedly unwilling to offer more than $2 million for one season.

Until now, the team expressing the most interest in Iverson was Memphis, but team owner Michael Heisley was quoted today in the Commercial Appeal as saying he thought the Grizzlies were a last resort for Iverson.

Iverson, who turned 34 last month, was traded from Denver to Detroit last season and had a disappointing season for the Pistons. He also caused a flap during the spring when he said he didn't want to come off the bench for the Pistons.

Iverson averaged a career-low 17.5 points in 57 games for Denver and Detroit. He won the NBA MVP award in the 2000-01 season.

It would be so incredibly idiotic to have BD and AI on the same team, only the Clippers would do it. Eric Gordon might turn into Rodney Stuckey and regress.

Too bad they already traded Zach Randolph. Do they still have Ricky Davis? Can you imagine if they somehow traded for Curry as well:

    BD
    AI
    Ricky Buckets
    Zach Randolph
    Eddy Curry

    Now THAT's a power team :D

Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, we need another guy to shoot the ball!

AI vs. Baron vs. Dunleavy, that would be real interesting.

I only see this happening if Baron Davis is traded, which I doubt anyone wants him right now with his contract and this economy, and his recent play probably won't help either.

Would be funny to see a backcourt of Davis and Iverson, though.

To lose? The most important thing for the Clippers is the development of Griffin, Gordon and Thorton. Nothing else really matters (I don't think DeAndre Jordan will ever amount to much). Adding AI to that team would definitely be a blow to Gordon and maybe the other two as well.

There is a lot of downside to adding AI and no upside other than maybe selling tickets at the beginning. But after AI's act wears thin, he won't help them sell tickets at all.

what on earth? what are you guys so worried about the clippers' welfare for? i just think that's a potentially entertaining and interesting team. could care less if they win or if it blows up in their faces.

is iverson a good fit on any team?

With his ego on his shoulder, AI is a better fit for the Harlem Globetrotters than he is an NBA team. He'll kill the chemistry of a good team and stunt the growth of younger players on a bad team. I don't even need to mention what a pain in the neck he is for coaches. There is a reason somebody started a thread about AI twisting in the wind. He's basically made himself radioactive. He's 34 going on 16.

I'm not "worried" about the Clippers, just discussing their prospects.

Now, We all know that winning is not that important to AI. Seriously, I do not get why the Clippers. He might as well just retire. :D

why don't we sign him to a 2 year contract, 2nd year team option for 2-3 million per? it wouldn't hurt to have AI who's trying to prove himself after last year.

Would be great to have AI on the team. He can still attract double teams to free the team's shooters. He can create his own shot. A low risk gamble to offer him a year or two year contract. Part of the MLE just in case there are no other front court help left in the free agency.

The whole situation with Iverson sort of echos his whole career...yes he was an MVP, yes he was great at one time, but now he doesn't want to sacrifice his starting position or his game to actually be a winner.

He doesn't care where he plays as long as he starts...it's not about any kind of legacy it's only about money. I can't figure out if the guy has been bad with money, is greedy, or is just plain stupid.

If only rox traded for him when he was traded to the nuggets. Him, Tmac and Yao could have won the championship, and still playing well today as they need not carry sole responsible for the team welfare.

God forbid the Clippers try to get a little more competitive next season, or that AI wants to go to a place where he's got a good amount of talent surrounding him that will still guarantee him a place to play. God forbid the guy just wants to play some more hoops, he's not ready quite yet to hang it up. He's not the player he once was, but he's not the embarrassment to basketball you think, either.

Iverson still plays the game harder than anyone else, absorbs more contact, is more daring driving to the hoop... I think the young guys on the Clips could learn something from his on-court play. Everyone dumps on AI for the bad season last year for the Pistons but they forget how much the rest of those guys quit during the playoffs. Sheed, Rip, Stuckey, Prince... that team had alot more problems than just AI.
