Warren Moon. At the age of 13, I wrote an editorial that was printed in the Chronicle calling Moon "the supreme God of football" I had the biggest man-crush on him. He will always be my favorite athlete, in any sport, of all time. Can't help the homerism.
Homerism is okay if you are really compelled by it. I was just hoping to avoid a list of favorite Oilers of all time...
Emmitt Smith. He is the only reason I watched Cowboys football for the last 4 years. He never had the greatest ability in the world, but he stayed injury free and never gave up.
I always thought it was James Harris or at least Doug Williams that started it. Seriously, it is no contest - John Elway is my choice.
giddy, you should have asked who was your FIRST favorite NFL player. The one that got you started watching NFL football. That would have been interesting to see how the older guys on the board got started watching the NFL. My first favorites were, OJ Simpson and Charley Taylor (WR Redskins) Then Earl came along...
Dang no-edit: I forgot Joe Namath as one of my first favorites. Hard to forget what this man did for the old AFL.
Anybody ever hear of Marlon Briscoe of the Denver Broncos? Yeah, Harris preceeded Williams and Cunningham, but Briscoe is the first black quarterback that I can remember. Joe Gilliam goes a way back, too. BobFinn-- I could have gone that way. What got my mind going on this was watching a re-run of "Brian's Song." W-E-E-P....
I remember Marlon Briscoe later went on to become a wide reciever for the Buffalo Bills. Briscoe was the first black QB to ever START an NFL game. Hopefully it was the original Brian's Song with James Caan, and not the crappy remake from a few years ago.
Deion Sanders during his falcon/49ner days when he went to the Cowboys, he was just another Cowboy in my mind. A close 2nd would be Thurman Thomas
